Do you want to work for a company whose purpose is to improve society by considering social outcomes, and to transform businesses, communities, and opportunities for it’s employees? Mott MacDonald is a global consultancy whose people do exactly that.
Your input will help our project teams and clients to deliver complex multidisciplinary projects, resulting in strategic decisions, engineering solutions and the desirable social outcomes that you can be proud of. Whether it is restoring rivers to make them more resilient to climate extremes, understanding risks from erosion to utilities and infrastructure or finding ways to work with and emulate natural processes, your work will bring lasting benefits to local communities and the environment around the world.
The role will be challenging, varied and offer fantastic opportunities for technical skill set and wider career development.
You will be responsible for:
- Providing excellent geomorphological advice to assist concept, outline and detailed designs for work in river environments.
- Prepare holistic plans for flood risk management, natural flood management and river restoration/habitat creation schemes.
- Undertake field surveys to collect baseline information on river environments.
- Developing innovations for data collection and interpretation in river and floodplain environments.
- Lead environmental assessments relating to the water environment, with a focus on hydromorphology (e.g. Water Framework Regulations).
- Prepare calculations and reports for erosion risk assessments and design of mitigation measures.
- Contribute to technical mentoring and professional development of the team, developing and maintaining client relationships, attending conferences, writing articles or thought leadership pieces and networking across the industry.
The preferred location for the role is flexible.
- Relevant degree-level qualifications (e.g. geography, geomorphology, environmental sciences, hydrology, catchment science or other related disciplines)
- Chartered with an appropriate professional body.
- Proven track record in successful delivery of applied river geomorphology projects of varying complexity, including field and desk-based approaches.
- Understanding of water environment legislation.
- Numerate, with skills and interest in environmental data analysis.
- Wider water quality, aquatic ecology or hydrology interest to complement geomorphological skills.
- Willingness to innovate.
- Able to guide and mentor junior staff, and to work successfully in a dynamic environment and in multi-disciplinary teams.
If you meet 80% or more of what we’re looking for, please still apply. We understand not everyone will meet all the requirements, but you might have skills we didn’t know we need.
Job Profile
With increasing awareness of changing climate on the environment and society, the importance of understanding how we can better work with natural processes in river catchments is vital.
In the UK, the Government’s 25-year Environment Plan challenges us all to think more holistically and tackle increasingly complex technical issues.
Solutions should seek to deliver multiple benefits, be sustainable in the long term, improve resilience of the natural environment and social outcomes for communities.
In this context, we are looking for an experienced river-focused Geomorphologist (Senior or Principal level) with a passion for improving the environment. We are involved in major infrastructure projects nationally as well as river restoration programmes where your skills will be needed.
Demand for these services continues to grow, and we are keen to engage a talented river geomorphologist to drive innovation, work across disciplines in complex projects, support the development of our people and strengthen our offering. The role will lead technical delivery of geomorphology and water environment assessments throughout the UK and potentially internationally.
This position can be offered on a full-time or a part-time basis.
