Working as part of a team and under the supervision of Biomedical Scientist staff, participate in the day-to-day support of HPV testing in the Cytopathology Laboratory, Cellular Pathology, including assisting in the preparation and processing of clinical specimens for diagnostic testing.
Assist the Biomedical Science staff in supervising band 2 or trainee staff.
Vacancies have arisen for a Band 3 Higher Medical Laboratory Assistant in the Cervical Screening, Cytology and HPV department at Southmead Hospital in Bristol.
Part of Severn Pathology the Department was one of the 8 labs Natiowide to win the Cervical Screening contracts. The purpose of the department is to process and report Cervical Screening samples using HPV testing and manual screening as well as preparing diagnostic samples from other body parts.
This new post is to support HPV testing and diagnostic sample preparation.
The successful applicant will need to have experience of laboratory processes. They will need to be organised, motivated and be able to train and supervise staff as part of a large friendly team.
The department is located in a large and modern purpose built facility on the outskirts of the vibrant city of Bristol.
The department runs flexible working hours with weekends if desired. You would be part of a large friendly team
1. Participate in the receipt, recording and storage of specimens, including data input to laboratory computer
2. Participate in the preparation, cleaning and maintenance of laboratory equipment and working areas.
3. Assist BMS staff in the setting up of diagnostic samples including booking on, recording description, preparing consumables, collation of work and cleaning.
4. Carry out the disposal of samples to the departmental protocol and record necessary information.
5. Participate in Human Papilloma Virus testing including sample preparation, loading of Tom Cats and Panthers, loading consumables and completing necessary paperwork.
6. Participate in the record keeping for consumable acceptance testing and stock taking.
7. File and retrieve records and slides
8. Supervise band 2 members of staff and assist with issues.
9. Participate in the preparation of reagents for routine laboratory use.
10. Check stock levels and inform seniors of any required stock.
11. Deal with telephone enquiries to the department
12. When relevant, contact individuals and agencies within and external to NBT to seek information necessary for service provision
13. Notify senior staff of all problems encountered in the performance of duties
14. Work according to the Standard Operating Procedures as documented
15. Work within established Health and Safety guidelines
16. Participate in the training of staff
17. Participate in staff appraisal / PDP according to Trust policies and procedure.
