**About the role**:
As the Senior Communications Officer in the Department of Materials, you will take a leading role in defining and enhancing the Department’s identity, both internally and externally. This role is pivotal to promoting the Department’s cutting-edge research, world-class teaching, and impactful outreach, serving as a key connector between the Department and its diverse audiences, including students, academics, industry partners, and the broader public.

You will have ownership of the Department’s communication strategy, crafting and delivering high-quality content across digital platforms, including the website, social media, newsletters, and print publications. Additionally, you will be the driving force behind initiatives that highlight the Department’s achievements,

**What you would be doing**:
Strategy & Stakeholder Engagement
- **Lead the development and execution of the Department’s overarching communications strategy, working closely with the Head of Department, Director of Operations and other stakeholders as appropriate, ensuring all communication upholds and amplifies Imperial and Department values.
Independently collect, analyse, and report on communications metrics to evaluate impact and identify strategic opportunities for growth.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with staff and students across the university as well as external partners, serving as the primary communications contact across the Department.

Digital Communications and Newsletters

Take full ownership of sourcing, writing, editing, and publishing digital content, from news articles to blog posts and feature stories, ensuring alignment with strategic goals.
- Ensure all communications follow the Imperial branding and accessibility guidelines and ensure the Department’s identity is represented most effectively within this framework.Produce a monthly Departmental newsletter and quarterly newsletters for collaborative initiatives as required (e.g. Royce at Imperial and QuEST (Imperial Centre for Quantum Engineering, Science and Technology). Monitor and analyse statistics from newsletters, adjusting format, frequency, and content for audience where necessary.
- Create, manage, and optimise digital campaigns to raise awareness of materials science and Department activities among prospective students and the broader community.

Social Media Management

Assume full responsibility for developing an annual content and social media schedule.
- Assume full responsibility for developing Departmental social media channels, ensuring performance is managed and analysis optimised on Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram, BlueSky and YouTube.

Website Management

Oversee the quality, accuracy, style and engagement of the Departmental websites and intranets, ensuring timely updates and engaging design.
- Develop, monitor, and manage the Department of Materials and Royce at Imperial web pages, including coordinating photography, podcasts, videos and stakeholder profiles as appropriate.
- Ensure websites meet Imperial’s accessibility standards.

**What we are looking for**:

- Education to a minimum undergraduate degree or equivalent qualification.
- Qualification (or equivalent experience) in academic and/or science communications.
- Experience of working in an institute of higher education.
- Experience and knowledge of marketing.
- Experience in science communication.
- Experience of design for print and digital media, understanding of the importance of brand guidelines.
- Experienced at liaising and communicating with colleagues at all levels and external agencies and achieving successful conclusions.
- A working knowledge of higher education policies and processes and of current issues affecting the higher education sector.
