Fugro are now recruiting a Geoenvironmental Monitoring Engineer to join our HS2 project team based at our Wallingford office. This team is responsible for gathering site geoenvironmental data to enable the client to make informed decisions during the engineering,design, and construction phases of HS2, ultimately reducing project risk and costs. As a Geoenvironmental Monitoring Engineer, you will be responsible for visits to a range of sites to monitor, sample and test, groundwater and ground gas from pre-installedground monitoring wells and boreholes utilising a range of pumping, sampling, and testing techniques. You may also be required to download and process data from in situ data loggers and sample spoil heaps and arisings from exploratory holes.

The role will be predominantly site based with daily travel. Some short periods staying away from home will be required. The employee must be capable of working independently and as part of a team of engineers/scientists on site. Additional responsibilitieswill include assisting with the transfer and processing of site and laboratory data, ensuring that data is tracked accurately, and that information is provided to the project team and client in a timely manner. This is a fixed term 12 month contract.

Who you’ll be working with:
Reporting to a Principal Geoenvironmental Engineer, the geoenvironmental monitoring engineer works closely with reporting teams and other departments within Fugro to collect, process and coordinate data, and produce reports and other deliverables.

Here’s what a typical day would be like in the office:

- Liaising with the Principal Geoenvironmental Engineer and Project Managers to plan monitoring and sampling visits;
- Recording project progress against programmes;
- Equipment maintenance and assist the Principal Geoenvironmental Engineer with the management of consumables;
- Manage sample transport and tracking to nominated analytical chemistry laboratories under the supervision of the Principal Geoenvironmental Engineer;
- Download and process site data;
- Upload processed data and reports to various SharePoint and MS Teams sites;
- Aid the Team Leader with other site and office activities as required;
- Administer laboratory testing programmes.

Here’s what a typical day would be like on site:

- Purging and developing monitoring wells and installations;
- Recording data using ruggedised tablets;
- Calibration of in situ test equipment;
- Download data from in situ data loggers;
- Collect environmental samples of groundwater and ground gas from pre-installed ground monitoring wells utilising a range of pumping and sampling techniques;
- Collect environmental samples of spoil tips and arisings from boreholes;
- Label samples and prepare chains of custodies prior to transit;
- Liaise with site teams, analytical laboratories and stakeholders;
- Upload data to MS Teams and SharePoint Sites.

Who we’re looking for:
Essential
- A degree or similar qualification in Earth Sciences;
- Actively pursuing chartership through an appropriate professional institution;
- Full UK Driving licence;
- Willingness and ability to travel regularly to site locations across the UK;
- Computer literate, capable of using spreadsheets and SharePoint;
- Capable of generating a safe and quality-based culture within the team;
- Strong communication skills, both written and verbal;
- A good team player and able to form working relationships with clients and colleagues at all levels.

Desirable
- Previous experience as a Geoenvironmental Monitoring Engineer;
- SSSTS qualification.
