**Your new role**

National Highways have an excellent opportunity for a Senior Environmental Specialist to join our team in the South East. The Senior Environmental Specialist will provide deep specialism and technical expertise in the identification and evaluation of environmental needs and early solutions, while assuring adherence to defined policies and standards.

The role may be required to work unsociable hours. You will also be required to drive as part of your role and you will need to have a full clean driving license to be considered for this position and during employment.

**What you’ll be leading on**
- To lead and coordinate the activities and resources involved in the identification and evaluation of environmental needs in order to develop solutions.
- To technical advice and input into the development of early solutions for improvements and/or renewals, taking into account new techniques, materials, feasibility, and costs.
- To identify and commission environmental studies and survey works.
- To collaborate with engineering colleagues and Route Managers to ensure forward programme plans reflect asset needs and priorities, environmental legislation, business priorities and strategies.
- To manage internal programme of environmental scoping tasks
- To contribute to the development of process and procedures directly related to environmental asset
- To ensure that asset inventory and condition information is captured and maintained in the relevant database(s).
- To oversee and advise on the development of technical briefs provided to the design and construction contractor for improvement and renewals work.
- To support technical reviews of third party designs to ensure that they comply with standards and design briefs.
- To monitor the delivery of agreed solutions and plans, liaising with the relevant teams to identify and/or rectify issues.
- To oversee the production of environmental improvements and renewals and associated documentation, and provide input for monthly financial forecasts and annual/quarterly bids.
- To manage and produce calculations for KPI reporting for no net loss of biodiversity.
- To coach and support the professional development of more junior team members.
- To recommend opportunities to improve environmental asset management capability, processes and approaches, and manage the implementation of changes within own area of responsibility; champion and share best practice, and promote compliance to recognised standards.
- Develop and recommend best practice and innovative approaches for identifying and evaluation environmental needs and early solutions.
- Recommends improvements in the development of environment management processes and approaches.
- Provide information relating to programme and budget impacts.
- To ensure the health and safety needs and wellbeing of customers and employees are fully considered and accounted for throughout the planning and delivery of each service activity.

**To be successful**
- Degree or equivalent qualification in relevant discipline or equivalent experience
- Membership of professional body
- Understanding of the Value Management process or cost benefit analysis of schemes
- Strong knowledge of asset condition assessment and degradation modelling
- Experience in working within budgets including the creation of a budget for scheme development
- Experience in highway construction and delivery methods
- Familiarity with GIS packages
- Knowledge of tree risk management (desirable)
- Strong understanding of relevant environmental asset policies and strategies
- Environmental asset management decision making (e.g. investment, lifecycle costs, value optimisation, service optimisation.
