Your new role
Here at National Highways, we currently have an opportunity for an Environmental Specialist to join our team in the South East. As a Specialist, you will be carrying out environmental assessments of schemes as part of our asset renewals and improvementsprogrammes. This will include Environment and Wellbeing Designated Fund projects (EWDF), ring fenced funding for environmental improvements across the network.
You will also be carrying out environmental inspections, assessing both safety and conditions of the soft estate including ponds, woodland and wildlife structures.
This role will heavily involve being out on the Strategic Road Network, engaging with residents, and preparing work specifications for our Maintenance and Response Contractor.
The work will involve GIS systems to update our records and help ensure that we are managing our environmental assets to benefit people and wildlife.
- You will be required to drive as part of your role and you will need to have a full clean driving license to be considered for this position_
What you’ll be leading on
- To undertake site-based environment assessments, including ecology and arboriculture.
- Prepare management plans and assessment reports.
- Appraise assessments undertaken by third parties.
- To monitor the delivery of agreed plans, liaising with the relevant teams to identify and/or rectify issues.
- To undertake inspections of the environment assets in scope, in line with the defined inspections regime and statutory requirements.
- To ensure that environmental inventory and condition information is captured and maintained in the relevant database(s).
- To ensure the health and safety needs and wellbeing of customers and employees are fully considered and accounted for throughout the planning and delivery of each service activity.
- Develops and recommends best practice and innovative approaches for identifying and evaluation environmental needs and early solutions
- Recommends improvements in the development of environment management processes and approaches.
- Provide information relating to programme and budget impacts
To be successful
- Degree or equivalent qualification in relevant discipline or equivalent experience
- Membership of professional body
- Demonstratable experience of environment assessment process.
- Broad knowledge of aspects and impact for varying environmental receptors
- Adaptable and keen to develop knowledge of all aspects of highways management
- Experience in highway construction and delivery methods
- Ability to manage a large workload.
- Knowledge of legislative frameworks
- Familiarity with GIS packages
- Ability to analyse and interpret a variety of field-based results
- Field survey experience within relevant specialism
