Assistant Harbour Master
We're looking to increase our team with an Assistant Harbour Master. You'll help us to manage the visitor experience in the harbour, as well as making a valuable contribution to our conservation work.
Here at Brancaster Staithe, we're fortunate to manage the beautiful harbour and the surrounding marshes, which leads to Scolt Head Island and the Wash. It's a beautiful area that has something to offer boaters, walkers, wildlife enthusiasts or just those in search of peace and tranquillity.
In addition to those who arrive by car, bike or on foot, we also welcome visitors who visit by boat to enjoy the peace and tranquillity of these beautiful surroundings.
This role is based on annualised hours, where the amount of hours you work each month may vary, however your salary will be paid in 12 equal instalments over the year. You'll work 75 hours per year.
Please note - it's critical to the role that you are available to work weekends and bank holidays and that you can be flexible to work shifts as and when the tides demand. This might be mean an early start (e.g. 7am) or a late finish (early evening) on any given day.
**What it's like to work here:This vacancy is included in a trial of the ‘Disability Confident’ scheme (level 1).**
You’ll become part of a friendly and dedicated team and get to meet new people on a regular basis. You'll also enjoy new experiences and learn new skills, whilst gaining personal satisfaction through supporting our cause.
The harbour is very popular and used by many different users, including commercial fishing boats, powerboats, sailing boats, paddleboarders, sightseers and wild swimmers. This makes the area extremely busy during high tides especially spring tides, when it can be under water.
Weekend and bank holiday working will be determined by tides and weather and will be set by the Area Ranger/Harbourmaster (ideally with one month notice in advance). We will establish a team who can cover all times and this may require a certain amount of flexibility.
What you'll be doing:You'll support the Harbour Master to manage the harbour, so that it can be enjoyed safely by all users. This will involve greeting people as they arrive at the harbour, provide information about activities going on in the harbour that day and highlighting other possible hazards (e.g. poor weather). You will encourage harbour users launching their boats for the day to make donations towards the running and upkeep of the harbour and you will promote other near-by National Trust properties. You will help with the upkeep of the Harbour Master’s boat and tender.
Who we're looking forWe'd love to hear from you, if you have:
- Qualified in RYA Power Boat Level 2 or equivalent
- Comfortable on the water and are willing to learn about boat craft
- Great at engaging people from all walks of life, with a calm and friendly approach
- Aware of the importance of relevant health and safety procedures and compliance requirements to safely go afloat
- Familiar with the potential hazards common to small informal harbours, including tides, weather and other harbour users
- Great team player, able to work alongside more senior colleagues and volunteers
- A level of fitness that will allow you to embark and disembark our boat if necessary and be afloat for the duration of the tide, if needed
The packageThe National Trust has the motto ‘For everyone, for ever’ at its heart. We’re working hard to create an inclusive culture, where everyone feels they belong. It’s important that our people reflect and represent the diversity of the communities and audiences we serve. We welcome and value difference, so when we say we’re for everyone, we want everyone to be welcome in our teams too.
- Substantial pension scheme of up to 10% basic salary
- Free entry to National Trust places for you, a guest and your children (under 18)
- Tax free childcare scheme
- Rental deposit loan scheme
- Season ticket loan
- Perks at work discounts i.e. gym memberships, shopping discount codes, cinema discounts

- Employee assistance programme
- Free parking at most locations
- Independent financial advice
