Research Associate for Beam Dynamics and Halo
1 week ago
Applications are invited for the role of Research Assistant for Beam Dynamics & Halo control in HL-LHC.
The luminosity upgrade of the Large Hadron Collider will increase the delivered instantaneous luminosity by an order of magnitude to search for new, rare, particles and perform precision measurements of the standard model of particle physics. The machine challenges are significant, including unprecedented understanding of the beam dynamics, high intensity collimation and the use of crab RF cavities. The project has entered a construction phase and there are key research and development beam physics’ studies needed to consolidate the performance of the baseline scenarios and to assess potential further improvements.
The position is part of HL-LHC-UK phase 2, the UK project to deliver key R&D and hardware to HL-LHC in the areas of HL-LHC in beam dynamics, collimation, crab cavities, diagnostics, cold powering and surface treatments. The PDRA will join a vibrant and supportive UK-wide team and will be based in the UK. There will be an opportunity to spend some time at CERN.
The position is 2-years funded equally funded from STFC through HL-LHC-UK phase 2 and the Cockcroft Institute core grant. You will be supervised by Prof. Appleby and Dr Stefano Redaelli.
This post builds on the long-lasting collaboration between CERN and UK on collimation studies and software development. You will address the performance of the baseline HL-LHC upgrade plans for the collimation system, involving modelling and simulations of halo formation, cleaning mechanisms, potential performance limitation and halo control mechanisms. The theoretical and computational work will include participation to measurement in the LHC Run III with the newly installed HL-LHC collimation hardware.
You will fully explore the transverse halo in LHC proton operation, knowledge of which is essential for the high intensity operation of the LHC Run III and HL-LHC. The halo formation mechanisms will be modelled using theoretical tools of diffusion, and the analysis of all the halo-contributing processes. The models will be supplemented with computational tools such as X-track and BDSIM, as well as new tools being developed at CERN, and simulations of halo formation and loss compared to measurements from Run III. Once the halo is understood for the early run 4 HL parameter case, possible limitations to the HL operation from over-populated beam halos will be studied and halo control addressed. You will also explore mechanisms for active halo controls (for example, (but no restricted to) hollow electron lens) and extrapolate performance to future HL-LHC parameter sets. If relevant, the work will also assess impacts on experimental background from collimation losses and their mechanisms. You will collaborate directly with the CERN collimation team and will have opportunities to validate their simulation studies by participation in Machine Development tests during LHC Run-III.
The successful applicant would be expected to have experience of accelerator physics research.
