**What is Shared Lives?**

Shared Lives is for adults who need a little extra support and would benefit from living in a home environment, it’s a bit like foster care - but for adults.

Ategi carefully match the person that needs support with one of our specially trained Shared Lives carers. As a Shared Lives carer, you would share your home and family with them, helping the adult you support to develop their skills, work towards their goals and support them to be more independent. Supporting them to live their best life, their way. As a Shared Lives carer you get to work from home and enjoy a career that truly makes a difference.

**What kind of support would you be offering?**

What makes being a Shared Lives carer special is you can support in your own way and we'll match you with someone who fits into your lifestyle. You can offer one of these arrangements, or a combination, you can support one person or a few - it's flexible to suit you

**Shared days**: This is for carers who don't have a spare room, or want to offer support during the day. This is also a great way to start out as a Shared Lives carer and see what it's like. You would share your days at your home or out and about. You could be helping someone to learn a new skill to help them gain confidence, or just taking them out for the day.

**Short breaks**: This is when you have someone stay in your home, this can be overnight, for a few days or a week, or even longer depending on the circumstances and what you're able to offer.

**Shared Lives**: This is when you have someone move into your home, they'd need to have their own room and they'd become part of your household/ family. How long they stay could vary - it could be a few months or anything up to many decades.

With the mix of people living in Shared Lives, sharing their days or staying for short breaks, it can be as consistent or varied as suits you and your lifestyle. Shared Lives carers open their homes to support a range of adults over 18: people with learning disabilities, mental health issues, Autism, physical disabilities, older people, sensory impairment, or people moving from foster care into Adult services.

Our Shared Lives carers are self-employed, working in partnership with the Local Authority and Ategi. At Ategi we provide full training and ongoing support to all our carers as well as providing a range of benefits.

**Could you be a Shared Lives carer?**

If you want to be a Shared Lives carer, you need to have either care experience - through personal experience of supporting someone who needs care, or a member of your family, paid or voluntary work - transferrable skills, or a hunger to learn. An important ingredient to becoming a Shared Lives carer is having time and a spare room - essential for short breaks and people moving in To provide Shared Days, your home will need to have enough communal space to be able to offer the person space to have quiet time.
