Job Introduction
The Operations Team in Southampton provides technical services to our daily regional News Programme, _South Today_ as well as _Politics South_.

Main Responsibilities
Carry out the necessary planning to ensure that all required facilities and arrangements are available in the gallery and on the studio floor (and where appropriate for outside).
- Co-ordinate assembly of all material required for programme.
- Responsible for handling problems encountered with live transmissions, taking account of editorial priorities and availability of resources.
- Decide on which equipment is best suited to the editorial “style” sought.
- Advise and guide on story treatments in terms of production values and technical viability.
- Direct the programme for live broadcasts, transmission or recording, either on location or studio taking into account time constraints, lighting requirements and film-making techniques. - Supervise and produce the editing of material on video tape (VT) as required.
- Write scripts as required. - Identifies and tells stories in a concise and clear way.
- Understands editorial issues relating to emerging stories.
- Schedule other members of the team, deciding where necessary the appropriate level and nature of support required to provide a quality service.
- Responsible for appraisal, development and guidance of less experienced members of the team.
- Explains clearly the technical and operational facilities and limitations to programme-makers. - Interpret the requests of our colleagues and within budgetary limitations, realise their artistic requirements in the most creative way possible to contribute ideas to the programme.
- Plan and organise assignments and projects, ensuring the workload is prioritised around broadcast deadlines and business requirements.
- Scan market to make contacts for independent or corporate customers.

Multi-skilling is critical to the smooth running of the Operations department in Southampton and whilst the roles mentioned above are most desirable, you may have other skills that you bring to the team.

The aptitude and willingness to adapt to the changing needs of the department are also essential. This may include taking on new skills with appropriate training.

You will be used to working effectively with colleagues in the production team to develop ideas and come up with solutions and ideas to make our output as good as it can be for our audiences.

You will be experienced in a fast turnaround daily news environment, working to tight deadlines.

We react to news events, so you should have a flexible approach to working. We operate 7 days a week and duties will include some late nights, weekends and Bank Holidays. You will be expected to work on location and in the building. You must be willing to travel around the region and occasionally abroad as required and must have a full UK driving licence.

Part of the role includes working as a Technical Director 2 (TD2) in our gallery, with responsibility for communications, lighting, cameras and sound. Training would be given for this.
