The Emergency Department (ED) was purpose built in 2014 and offers state of-the-art facilities. This was part of a new development at Glan Clwyd Hospital called the Emergency Quadrant (EQ) which brings all Emergency and Acute Services together. The EQ houses the ED, Same day emergency care (SDEC), a 24 bed Acute Medical Unit, Surgical Assessment Unit, Radiology services, and a co-located primary care facility. The EQ is based on a guiding principle of close working between specialties to provide excellent care to patients by fostering cooperation and interaction between teams. There are approximately 60,000 attendances a year, of which 15,000 are under 18.
The ED sees a full case mix of undifferentiated emergencies encompassing all specialties including Major Trauma, Stroke, Cardiac, Vascular, ENT, Ophthalmology, Max Fax and Paediatrics.
The Department has also been undergoing a process of implementation of modern models of Emergency Care including streaming, ambulatory majors, and rapid assessment.
- Support the Nurse in Charge to manage Emergency Department (ED) risk escalating ED capacity and safety concerns
- Allocating staff to the ED areas and responding to demand by moving staff as needed, following up on any sickness / no-shows / late starts and ask for extra cover
- Focusing on patient safety risks, reviewing unwell patients, and seeing patients as needed.
- Supporting the streaming of patients to MIUs, specialities or SDEC where appropriate
- Anticipating and intervening with unexpected issues, e.g., health and safety risks
- Prescribing analgesia, signing off ECGs and blood gases as needed
- Order imaging and investigations as necessary to support triage and streaming and review results.
- Taking calls from MIUs, GPs, Microbiology, Radiology and Pathology.
- undertake the role of Trauma Team Leader for Major Trauma
- Investigation, report writing, and investigating/updating of Datix and action plans on current incidents and complaints sharing learning from these events with ED team
- Supporting the streaming service/ Rapid assessment and treatment service.
- Assisting with triage and review of ambulance patients
