Bristol Genetics Laboratory (BGL) is looking to recruit a permanent part time Band 2 Specimen Reception Assistant.

BGL is part of the South West Genomic Laboratory Hub (SW GLH) which is provided by a partnership between North Bristol NHS Trust and the Royal Devon and Exeter Foundation Trust to deliver centralised genomic analysis for patients with cancer and rare disease throughout the South West region.

We are a large, well-equipped laboratory and duties will include unpacking biological specimens and entering patient data onto laboratory computer systems.

Applicants will be expected to possess a good basic education (GCSE grade C or equivalent level, including English, Maths and Science), good basic IT skills (keyboard skills) and a calm, meticulous approach. Full training will be provided.

- To participate in the receipt, recording and storage of specimens.
- To maintain accurate records as required by laboratory procedures using both computer and paper-based systems.
- Assist in the preparation of samples for analysis.
- Input of patient data into Department IT systems.
- Perform general clerical duties, eg, filing, photocopying etc.
- Monitor consumables and inform senior staff when stocks are low.
- Assist with the preparation, cleaning, decontamination of equipment and working areas and maintenance of laboratory equipment.
- To perform general laboratory duties, e.g. checking instruments and recording temperatures.
- To participate in risk management of the department including reporting of adverse incidents.
- Notify senior staff of all problems encountered in the performance of duties.
- To maintain safe and efficient standards of work, following codes of practice.
- Assist in training of other support staff as required by scientific staff responsible for co-ordinating training.
- Participate in staff appraisal according to Trust policies and procedures.
