Cardiff, United Kingdom BBC Full time

Job Introduction

In 2021, the BBC announced plans to move even more of our productions to bases across the UK. BBC Audio teams in Cardiff and Bristol are leading the way with a variety of programmes and podcasts for Radio 3, Radio 4, World Service and BBC Sounds. We’re now looking for an Editor to lead our new topical output team based primarily in Cardiff. This is a critical position bringing together some of our current programmes with output moving from London. If successful, you’ll be leading some of Radio 4’s biggest programmes including Saturday Live, Any Questions? Any Answers? and Last Word. This is a career defining role, working for one of the BBC’s fastest growing production teams and based in the BBC’s newest building in Central Square, Cardiff.

The right person will be an experienced journalist with an in-depth knowledge of UK politics and current affairs, providing credible editorial leadership of live output. You’ll be able to motivate production teams and high profile presenters through significant change. You’ll require substantial knowledge of Radio 4 output and the UK audio market. A champion of impartiality, diversity and sustainability, you’ll lead programme development on and off air.

**BBC Audio Wales and West of England**

We’re a new hub within BBC Audio bringing together network radio production teams in Cardiff and Bristol. Staff have opportunities to collaborate, develop ideas and further their careers across a wide variety of output for all the BBC Radio networks, the World Service and BBC Sounds. Our areas of production include: current affairs, science, factual, rural affairs, food, documentaries, books, music and drama.

Main Responsibilities
The role involves the day to day editorial, logístical and change management of topical audio staff in Cardiff and Bristol. You will inspire teams to continue delivering outstanding output for key Radio 4 strands, as well as creating new ideas to grow our business - radio and podcasts. You will be committed to creating diversity in our content and our workforce and have ideas for how you will do it. Working with production management, you will manage budgets and keep the business on track.

You will need strong journalistic skills and experience of making a range of output for different platforms. You will be a proven leader and performance manager of teams and talent. You will be able to develop and articulate a clear vision for production, and have the ability to inspire others to realize that ambition.
- Significant journalistic experience, at senior journalist or editor level
- The skills and experience to effectively lead, motivate and manage a diverse team, including managing development and performance
- Experience of developing and maintaining effective working relationships with presenters, internal colleagues and external partners and organisations
- Personal resilience, and the tenacity to lead diverse teams to deliver complex live output
- Highly developed planning and organisational skills with the ability to manage several areas of work at one time, deliver to deadlines and to react positively to changes and conflicting priorities
- A clear understanding of BBC values and behaviours, and of how to be a role model for others, inspiring them to lead, engage and create a sense of purpose and belonging
- Experience of managing numerous and diverse senior and executive level stakeholders, and the ability to plan and undertake significant change and project management activities with wide-ranging BBC impact, often operating with tight timescales and managing competing priorities
- A comprehensive knowledge of Radio 4, current audio markets, trends and issues within the broadcasting industry and knowledge of output across the whole of the BBC, as well as that of competitors
- The ability to lead the BBC with long-term vision using innovative creative, technical and/or professional skills

The role will be based primarily in Cardiff but travel to Bristol and other locations will be required.
