Job Title: Senior Care Assistant

Reports to: The Manager/ Deputy

Purpose of Job:
To be responsible for the physical, social and emotional care of all residents whilst on duty, in the absence of the Manager or Deputy. A Senior Care Assistant must be appropriately qualified for the role. Must have NVQ level 2/3 or equivalent in care and experience in working with dementia residents

1. To supervise/organise other members of staff on duty
To be accountable for the actions and instructions of other staff looking after residents in the Care Home
To delegate work/tasks to other members of staff at handover as and where necessary
To work also as part of the care team

2. To inform Manager/Deputy of any significant changes in residents
- contact by telephone where necessary if an issue is urgent.

3. Whilst on duty have autonomy to call a GP/Urgent Care Team or other Health Professional that is necessary if a resident requires medical assistant

4. Ensure care is given in a professional manner, as per individual plan of care for each resident, agreed by the Manager

5. To ensure that the day to day task are completed to the standards laid down by the Manager and are all good practice standards

6. Be responsible for the briefing and instructions to the staff on duty, and the handover to the next shift including a brief to the next Senior. To ensure that there is an adequate staff to cover the next shift. If there is not the senior is to stay until additional staff cover is found.

7. Be responsible for ensuring that only the appropriate assessed personnel give drugs/prepare drugs, and be responsible for drug keys, and the handover of all keys to the next shift

8. Be responsible for the cleanliness and adequate heating of all common places in the building and to take appropriate measures to maintain these standards. Any concerns contact the manager.

9. To participate in staff training and attend training sessions to ensure that knowledge and skills are updated in line with good practice to perform the job role and to supervise carers on the team.

10. To assist in staff training programmes/facilitate staff training/ staff induction programme and to work as a mentor to junior staff. To supervise new staff and contribute to their staff supervision

11. Participate in the development of activities for Residents in which they can join and enhance quality of life

12. Help to ensure that the preparation, cooking and serving of food meets the required standards

13. Help the manager with maintenance of all care and health records by Statutory Legislation.

14. Support the Manager in her duties for all health and safety regulations and meeting of care standards.

15. To support staff and other in the care home and encourage any “Whistle Blowing” to ensure no person is at risk in the Care Home and to take correct actions when there is an alert.

16. To ensure that Equality and Diversity is practiced within the Care Home by all who live, work and visit the Care Home. Any issues to be promptly reported to the Manager/Deputy.

17. To cover with any staff shortages both day and night to ensure the service runs smoothly and safely. Where there is a drop in the minimum number of staff on duty, the senior carer on duty will have to work on the shift until there is a replacement care worker available.

18. Staff will be expected to have training and be updated in Health and Safety, Fire Safety, Moving and Handling, First Aid, Food Hygiene, Infection Control, Equality and Diversity, Mental Capacity Act, Dementia Training, Safeguarding Training
