**About the Opportunity**
Jacobs is currently recruiting for a Scientific Computing Consultant to join our Radioactive Waste Management and Disposal business. The role can be based at Harwell, London, Birchwood or other locations will be considered. You will be part of a multi-disciplinary business (including chemists, physicists, geologists, engineers, safety case specialists, mathematicians and project managers) who provide consultancy, modelling, safety case and laboratory studies to underpin the science, technology and engineering to allow the safe disposal of radioactive waste.
You will support the development of our state of the art in-house groundwater modelling software suite ConnectFlow, including playing an important role in new developments and testing. You will also have the opportunity to engage with a wide range of different modelling projects within the area of Radioactive Waste Management, centred on modelling for geological disposal. You will have the opportunity to support client relationships and projects, both nationally and internationally, including liaising with clients and providing input to technical reports.

**Key Responsibilities**:
As a Scientific Computing Consultant, you will work on a range of consultancy projects for customers, including radioactive waste management organisations, radioactive waste producers and regulators, both in the UK and overseas. The responsibilities include
- Developments to ConnectFlow, our in-house groundwater modelling software suite including
- Developing new functionality
- Development of our 3D visualisation tool
- Helping with regular code releases
- Resolving issues as they arise in the software
- Improving the documentation of the software
- Providing support to both customers and internal users of the code
- Providing input to modelling studies in a range of technical areas; this is likely to include both simple and complex modelling to underpin the safety of a future geological disposal facility. Key modelling areas include:
- groundwater flow and solute transport both near surface and deep underground
- radionuclide release from waste packages and repositories into the atmosphere on performance assessments for underground repositories for radioactive waste
- gas transfer and migration
- coupled modelling
- Thermal modelling of radioactive waste under storage, transport or disposal conditions.
- Producing, and checking calculations, analyses, design basis documentation and technical reports
- Delivering technical and strategic support to our clients
**Here’s What You’ll Need**:
- Degree qualification (or equivalent training and experience) in physics or another physical science or engineering discipline
- Experience in scientific computing
- Experience in at least one of the following programming languages:
- Fortran
- Java
- Python
- C/C++
- C#
- Ability to write clearly and present complex arguments in a well-structured manner
- Adaptability, and willingness to work on a variety of projects, prioritising as appropriate
- Ability to work in multi-disciplinary teams
