Cambridge, United Kingdom University of Cambridge Full time

Applications are invited for a 4-year PhD studentship as part of the EPSRC SynTech Centre for Doctoral Training under the supervision of Professor Erwin Reisner. This project will focus on the development and implementation of photo-flow techniques to enable green and cost-effective methods to perform challenging organic transformations. Part of the project will use the decade-long experience of the Reisner group in designing photocatalyst materials based on inexpensive, robust and easily scalable carbon nitride and carbon nanodots. A key aspect is to ensure that the photocatalysts are not only easily applicable to flow techniques, but also access a wide variety of unconventional coupling partners. The goal is to achieve a step-change in automated chemical synthesis, which can be easily adopted by research laboratories and industries.

The project is interdisciplinary, and will encompass the expertise of materials chemistry, organic synthesis and engineering. The lists of skills involved are as follows:
Synthesis of solid-state carbon-based materials.

Material characterisation techniques, such as pXRD, SEM, TEM, UV-VIS, ATR-IR, XPS and XAS.

Green chemical synthesis with a focus on sustainability.

Organic methods development comprising various analytical techniques, such as NMR, mass spectroscopy, HPLC, LCMS, GC.

Process scale-up and model development using flow techniques.

High-throughput experimentation.

Automation and computer-aided design/modelling software.
