REQUIREMENTS This 12 month post is intended for an anaesthetist at ST5 (or equivalent) and above, or those with the CCT who want to enhance their CV by developing further clinical experience. On call experience for intensive care and obstetrics is essential. Applicants should be in possession of the FRCA, FFARCSI or equivalent. TEACHING, STUDY AND TRAINING The appointee will be allocated to an individual educational supervisor, who will ensure that bariatric training and competencies are developed according to the RCOA / SOBA guidelines.
The post holder will be an integral part of the team and expected to contribute to the teaching of doctors in training, medical students and other staff groups. It is expected that the post holder will take part in the regular departmental Clinical Governance meetings and participate in Continuing Medical Education as required by the Royal College of Anaesthetists. The post holder will be expected to contribute to the yearly Homerton bariatric symposium. The appointee is encouraged to become a member of SOBA and attend and ideally present at a minimum of one of their meetings during the year. To achieve this protected time will be allocated for audit, research and quality improvement initiatives in bariatric anaesthesia (2 sessions biweekly). The Homerton Anaesthetic Department has a selection of up to date reference texts plus network computers allowing access to the internet, intranet and preparation of PowerPoint presentations.
There is a Postgraduate Medical Education Centre, which runs regular lunchtime meetings for trainees, and there is a well-equipped library and audiovisual department. AUDIT There are cyclical audit projects available for trainees who are actively encouraged to participate in. There are opportunities to present this work at trust wide clinical governance and audit days. SIMULATION EXPERIENCE At Homerton University Hospital we have a separate building immediately adjacent to the acute hospital housing the Education Centre, which provides excellent facilities for clinical meetings, seminars and teaching.
The purpose built simulation suite was officially opened in 2011, and is housed in the Education Centre alongside a fully equipped clinical skills lab. In 2012 Homerton Simulation Centre received a highly commended award from the London Deaneryfor bestsecondary caredepartment at theElisabeth Paice Awards. We also received 2 further awards from STELI for Education - for Excellence in Productivity, and for Excellence in Academic Activity. In January 2014 we have successfully obtained funding from HENCEL (Health Education North Central and East London) for our multi-disciplinary in-situ training programme, which has expanded (including into primary care) every year since.
The in-situ simulation programme has been recognised by national bodies as being one of the most advanced in the country, and we continue to expand it every year, with a total of between 5 and 7 simulation fellows at Homerton of varying base speciality at any one time As an education & simulation facilitator the fellow will play a role in delivering the generic professional and clinical skills training for Foundation Programme doctors.
