The Emergency Department at Diana Princess of Wales Hospital, has recently implemented an Urgent Care Service co-located and managed by the emergency department, which focuses on the care of patients with minor injuries and illness, the model comprises of a mixture of GP’s, Urgent Care Practitioners and Health Care Assistants with plans to extend the service to 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
The service redevelopment, and the expansion of the clinical team has given us the opportunity to invest in qualified practitioners with an advanced practice qualification or support staff wanting to pursue a career in advanced practice from a variety of backgrounds e.g., hospital, community, and ambulance personnel. We are looking for skilled, enthusiastic, and motivated Practitioners with a desire to learn and develop whilst supporting the future development and success of the service, the post holder will be based in the ED co-located Urgent Care Service. It is essential that the applicant has five years’ experience as a registered healthcare professional with evidence of working at band 6 or above within an Emergency Department, GP practice, community, and/or Ambulance service and possess an Autonomous Practice qualification, be working towards, or be prepared to undertake the academic courses and clinical competencies to achieve level 7 qualifications in minor illness, minor injury, Xray interpretation.
As an Urgent Care practitioner, you will be essential in delivering exceptional care and treatment autonomously and will assess, diagnose, treat, and discharge or refer patients in accordance with agreed clinical guidelines. You will be responsible for delivering safe and effective care and work collaboratively to ensure the achievement of local and national key performance indicators.
The Urgent Care Practitioner will provide specialist advice and facilitate the implementation of patient care within the specialty which requires specific clinical knowledge, skills, and experience working alongside other clinical colleagues in emergency care and other specialties to ensure that quality care to patients is maximized.
For trainee urgent care practitioners there will be an expectation that they will work alongside an experienced Urgent Care Practitioner and Medical staff, you will be required to undertake role specific academic courses in minor illness, minor injuries, IR(ME)R, and x ray interpretation to develop your knowledge and skills whilst working through an ENP competency document before progressing from band 6 to band 7.

Duties and Responsibilities of the Post Holder
- To act as a role model and be recognized as an expert by colleagues.
- To maintain clinical competency in administration of drugs.
- Ensuring effective use of advanced nursing knowledge and skills relating to the specialty.
- Act as a patients advocate giving advice regarding treatment options in order that patients are able to give informed consent, by the provision of consultations to provide holistic care, support and educate patients, families/carers about their diagnosis, treatment plan and care/support package.
- Provide autonomous nurse led review of patients.
- Work collaboratively within the multi-disciplinary team providing a nurse led review of patients.
- The post holder will work alongside the Emergency Care Medics to provide early input of specialist services to patients.
