**Position Title: Facilities Maintenance Officer**
**Location: Care and Learning Alliance Settings across Highland**
**Hours: 20 hours per week**
Role Overview:
The Facilities Maintenance Officer is responsible for ensuring the smooth and efficient operation of all facilities across Care and Learning Alliance centres. This includes carrying out regular maintenance, small repairs, and ensuring that the premises meet health and safety standards for staff, children, and visitors.
Key Responsibilities:
Cleaning and General Upkeep:
- Oversee general maintenance of the outdoor areas at most of the CALA settings, including light gardening work of grass cutting, weeding and other general tasks.
- Support settings with the removal of large scale items for recycling or general landfill.
Small Joinery and Carpentry Work:
- Build or install basic furniture pieces (e.g., shelves, tables, and storage units) as needed within the settings.
- Repair and maintain wooden structures, including playground equipment and setting furniture..
Maintenance and Repair of Interior Fixtures:
- Repair or replace damaged or worn-out fixtures such as door handles, locks, hinges, and other minor hardware.
- Maintain and repair wooden flooring, window frames, and other wooden elements around the facility.
- Install and maintain any necessary support structures, such as handrails, shelving units, or cabinets.
Health and Safety Compliance:
- Adhere to health and safety standards, especially when working with tools, paints, and other materials.
- Use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) such as gloves, masks, and goggles when working with paint, tools, or during carpentry work.
- Ensure all workspaces are kept clean and tidy to prevent accidents and ensure a safe working environment.
- Working in collaboration with the Manager for each setting, the Facilities Maintenance Officer will work to ensure compliance with health and safety regulations and the individual risk assessments of the setting.
- Conduct regular safety audits to ensure each setting is compliant with fire safety, emergency exits, and equipment.
- Maintain records of maintenance activities and repairs to comply with regulations and audits.
Preventative Maintenance:
- Regularly inspect the facility for areas that may require painting or joinery work, such as worn-out doors, scratched walls, or damaged woodwork and report to manager of setting and CALA SMT.
- Plan and execute preventative maintenance tasks to prolong the life of the building’s interior and fixtures.
Collaboration and Communication:
- Communicate any significant repairs or maintenance needs to CALA SMT or relevant staff members.
- Assist with setting up spaces for special activities or events by providing necessary joinery or painting support (e.g., creating a safe and visually appealing play area).
Other Maintenance Duties:
- Assist with general maintenance tasks such as furniture assembly, wall hanging, and minor repairs that fall outside the scope of painting or joinery.
- Support with storage organisation, ensuring that materials and tools are properly stored and accessible for use.
Skills and Experience Required:
- Proven experience in facilities maintenance
- Good understanding of health and safety rules and regulations
- Ability to use maintenance tools and equipment safely and effectively.
- Excellent organisational skills with the ability to prioritise tasks.
- Good communication skills and the ability to work effectively within a team.
- Flexibility and the ability to respond to changing needs or emergencies.
- A proactive approach to problem-solving and attention to detail.
Desirable Qualifications:
- Health and Safety Certification (e.g., First Aid, Fire Safety, or similar).
Working Conditions:
- The role may require occasional evening or weekend work, depending on the needs of the facilities.
- Some manual lifting and physical work will be required.
- The role involves interacting with staff, children, and external contractors regularly.
