**Contract**: Full-time, usually 12 months (with the possibility of extension or rotation)
**Reports to**: Consultant Physician in General Medicine
**Department**: General Medicine / Acute Medical Unit (AMU)
**Job Purpose**:
To provide high-quality care for patients under the supervision of consultant physicians in **General Internal Medicine** and related specialties. The role involves both **acute care** of medical patients and **longitudinal care** of chronic conditions, contributing to the clinical team, medical education, and service development.
**Key Responsibilities**:
- **Clinical Duties**:
- **Acute Medical Care**:
- Participate in the acute medical take, assessing and managing acutely ill patients in the **Emergency Department (ED)**, **Acute Medical Unit (AMU)**, or wards.
- Perform rapid assessments, investigations, and initiation of treatment for a wide range of medical conditions.
- Manage medical admissions under the supervision of a consultant.
- **Ward-Based Care**:
- Take responsibility for day-to-day management of patients on general medical wards, ensuring timely treatment and discharge planning.
- Lead ward rounds with junior doctors, nurses, and allied healthcare professionals.
- Implement treatment plans, monitor progress, and adjust management as necessary.
- **Outpatient Clinics**:
- Conduct outpatient clinics in General Medicine, assessing chronic and complex cases, developing care plans, and arranging follow-up.
- **Procedures**:
- Perform common procedures relevant to General Medicine, such as lumbar puncture, chest drain insertion, and central venous catheter placement.
- **Teamwork and Supervision**:
- **Supervise and support junior doctors (F1, F2, CT1-CT2)**:
- Provide guidance in clinical decision-making, treatment plans, and patient management.
- Oversee the clinical work of more junior colleagues and provide teaching during ward rounds and in formal educational settings.
- **Work collaboratively** with nursing staff, allied health professionals, and administrative teams to ensure high standards of patient care.
- **On-Call Duties**:
- Participate in a **rotational on-call** rota to provide 24/7 medical cover.
- During on-call shifts, provide care for acutely unwell patients, respond to medical emergencies (e.g., cardiac arrests), and manage deteriorating patients across the hospital.
- **Education and Training**:
- Participate in **formal teaching** programs, both as a learner and educator.
- Engage in **Continuing Professional Development (CPD)** activities to keep skills up to date.
- Actively contribute to the teaching and training of medical students, junior doctors, and other healthcare professionals.
- **Clinical Governance**:
- Participate in **clinical audits**, **quality improvement projects**, and service reviews to enhance the quality of patient care.
- Contribute to **Morbidity and Mortality (M&M)** meetings, case presentations, and departmental teaching sessions.
- Ensure compliance with clinical guidelines, standards, and protocols set by the hospital and national bodies (e.g., NICE, NHS guidelines).
- **Research and Development**:
- **Engage in research activities** relevant to General Medicine and internal medicine subspecialties.
- Participate in clinical trials or service improvement projects as appropriate.
- Publish case reports, reviews, or original research in peer-reviewed journals when possible.
- **Administrative Duties**:
- Maintain accurate and timely patient records, including electronic documentation.
- Contribute to discharge summaries, referral letters, and other clinical documentation.
- Liaise with other medical teams, departments, and community services for effective patient care and discharge planning.
**Requirements**:
- **Essential Qualifications**:
- Full registration with the **General Medical Council (GMC)** and a valid license to practice in the UK.
- Successful completion of **Core Medical Training (CMT)** or **Internal Medicine Training (IMT)**.
- Membership of the **Royal College of Physicians (MRCP)** (or equivalent).
- **Desirable Qualifications**:
- Experience in a medical subspecialty (e.g., Cardiology, Respiratory Medicine, Gastroenterology, etc.).
- Completion of ALS (Advanced Life Support) or equivalent certification.
- **Skills and Attributes**:
- Strong clinical knowledge and experience in managing acute and chronic medical conditions.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team.
- Leadership qualities, including the ability to manage junior staff and clinical teams.
- Strong organizational and time-management skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks and manage busy workloads.
