Consultant in Diabetes

Maidstone & Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust is seeking to appoint two consultants, the first post will be a replacement post and the second will be a new post as part of the planned consultant expansion and services. They will be responsible to develop the Diabetes and Endocrinology service and will be based at the Tunbridge Wells site or Maidstone hospital but at times expected to work crosstie if required for the services point of view. The successful applicants will join six existing consultants within the department and involved with delivering high quality care to the patients.

Any sub speciality interest would be considered including the antenatal, young adults and others with mutual discussions. Both consultants will undertake out-patient clinics in both complex diabetes and endocrinology and will contribute to the general medical rota. And they will also be supported by a large team of diabetes specialists’ nurses and 3 endocrine nurse specialists.

Participate in clinical and other service activities and developments with the aim of ensuring a high standard of patient care across the Trust.

Work in close co-operation with other medical, professional and managerial colleagues, both within and outside the specialty, to provide high quality health care to the Trust’s patients, and to contribute to future thinking about the Trust’s strategic direction.

The Trust was formed in April 2000 by the merger of the Mid Kent Healthcare Trust and the Kent & Sussex Weald NHS Trust. It provides general hospital services to a population of approximately 480,000 in West Kent and North East Sussex, and Specialist Cancer services to a considerably larger population.

The Diabetes & Endocrinology Department provides a comprehensive range of services:
**Diabetes**: complex diabetes, DAFNE courses, antenatal, young adult, transitional, renal, foot and insulin pump clinics with provision for continuous and flash glucose monitoring.

**Endocrinology**: general endocrine, transitional endocrine, antenatal, radioiodine, thyroid eye disease clinics; input into thyroid cancer multi-disciplinary meetings; dynamic testing; in-patient care of endocrine patients.

**Community Integrated Diabetes Service**: this service was established in 2017/18 and is run as a “hub” and “spoke” model.

It is expected that the appointee will work closely with their colleagues in diabetes & endocrinology and will attend diabetes and endocrine multi-disciplinary meetings, grand rounds and clinical governance sessions. The appointee will be encouraged to develop a special interest in diabetes and/or endocrinology.

Participate fully in and share leadership of the clinical governance of the specialty covering its Trust-wide activities. To attend clinical governance half-days as detailed in the Trust’s Guide to Job Planning unless on agreed leave or while attending emergencies.

Participate actively in departmental audits, sharing co-ordination of audit activities within the department and implementation of change.

Take an active responsibility for undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, training and supervision.
