**Summary**:
The Department for International Trade has overall responsibility for developing, coordinating and delivering a new trade and investment policy for the UK, including preparing for and then negotiating new Free Trade Agreements and market access deals with non-EU countries, and promoting UK trade and investment across the world.

This role will be in the Departmental Analysis Team, which provides analytical support for the department’s corporate functions, and whose priorities include business planning, performance, and fiscal events.

The Strategic Departmental Analysis are the conduit between Analysis Group and the strategy functions across the department, co-ordinating intelligence with Analysis Group, feeding in economic appraisal and the analytical evidence base for strategic proposals and bids for fiscal events.

The team provides analytical challenge and input to spending proposals or departmental strategies to ensure proposals are evidence based, economically sound and can help strategic decision makers align with analytical activity and vice versa. The team also oversees the Economic Keyholder function providing “critical friend” challenge to the economic case within the wider business case process.

The team also takes on ad hoc strategic economic projects providing surge support to urgent, high profile commissions that cut across multiple analytical areas, bringing together insights and value for money advice.

**Job description**:
You will lead the time heading into potential fiscal events with a new Prime Minister, providing key analytical support to inform strategic and financial planning.

Key responsibilities of the role are:

- Being the first working level contact for Analysis and fiscal events, Spending Review decisions and implementation, co-ordinating intelligence for Analysis Group.
- Providing analytical challenge to spending proposals, business cases or departmental strategies, feeding in analytical input and mobilising the wider analytical evidence base to inform decision making.
- Oversee the Economic Keyholder network across Analysis Group.
- Champion and embed the economic narrative, including the Departmental-wide Logic Model and Theory of Change.
- Maintaining excellent working relationships with Finance, Strategy teams and other key stakeholders.
- Line management responsibilities of 2 junior economists (HEO grade).

**Hybrid Working**

Please be aware that this role can only be worked from within the UK and not overseas.

Informal hybrid working arrangements will be available as agreed with the vacancy manager and in line with the requirements of the role.

Most DIT employees will be working a hybrid pattern, spending 2-3 days a week (pro rata) in an office, on average. If your office location is London, you will be eligible to receive London weighting.

**Responsibilities**:
**Essential Criteria**
- You must be a full member of the Government Economic Service (GES).
- A degree at 2.1 (or above) or an MSc in Economics and be able to demonstrate substantial current experience in your career as a professional economist.

**Desirable Criteria**
- Prior experience of economic case appraisals.***
