Senior Communications Officer

We’re looking for a creative and dynamic Senior Communications Officer who can take the lead on high profile projects and campaigns, engaging and informing our customers using a range of channels.
Working in a vibrant city, for a small team within an ambitious local authority, this role offers a great opportunity to use your knowledge of the media, excellent copywriting skills and ability to build strong working relationships with key people to help manage our reputation, market our services and promote our vision and priorities.
You will be involved in a wide range of projects, deal with challenging media issues and manage competing demands, often working to tight deadlines.
Good attention to detail is a necessity, and you must be able to write, edit and proof copy and know what makes a good story. You would ideally also have experience in video production and have a keen eye for what makes a good design. Knowledge of social media trends is also sought, as is experience of liaising with local and regional media and the ability to provide quality communications advice to members and officers.
Among many other things, you will be responsible for planning and delivering communications strategies and evaluating the success of our activities.
**Key responsibilities**:
- Work under the general direction of the Communications Manager to contribute to the provision of a quality communications service - including public relations, press office, social media, design and video.
- To deliver a professional, proactive and creative communications service which supports the city council’s main vision and objectives.
- To support the development of the city council’s communications programme and project specific communications plans to deliver effective communications which strengthen the city council’s reputation.
- Knowledge of how to get the best out of social media in campaigns and media relations.
- Highly developed oral communications skills to liaise with people at all levels internally and externally.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality at work.
- Flexibility to provide for occasional evening or weekend work.
- Understanding of the law relating to publicity, including the Local Government Publicity Code, defamation and contempt.
- Understanding of Data Protection, Human Rights, Freedom of Information and legislation relating to publicity involving children and young people.
