Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for 18 months in the first instance.
Applications are invited for a research assistant role to join Dr Jenny Zhang at the Department of Chemistry on a project aimed at developing more exoelectrogenic cyanobacterial strains. The project involves the creation of large mutant libraries of cyanobacteria and automation of screening for electroactivity using a robotic platform. The successful applicant will be responsible for growing and maintaining cell cultures in a laboratory setting, as well helping to catalogue and characterise new cell strains. This involves a range of tasks, including preparing media and reagents, maintaining cell lines, performing cell culture techniques like passaging and plating, and analysing cell health and viability. They will work with various equipment like flow cabinets, incubators and microscopes whilst adhering to strict protocols and safety regulations. They will also help to develop automation protocols on a robot.
Applicants should have (or be about to obtain) a Bachelors in Science, majoring in molecular biology, biochemistry, or related disciplines. It is essential that the applicant can demonstrate experience in cell biology or cell culturing techniques.
The Department holds an Athena SWAN silver award for women in Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, and Medicine.
The University has a responsibility to ensure that all employees are eligible to live and work in the UK.
