Job summary

An exciting opportunity to join our busy General & Emergency Surgery department at North Middlesex University Hospital (NMUH) has arisen following a recent expansion to our General Surgery services. We are recruiting for a Full Time Consultant General Surgeon (10 PA's). The post holder will need to have wide experience of all aspects of emergency general surgery care. An interest in Elective gastrointestinal surgery, either upper or lower, would also be desirable.

The Consultant in General Surgery will work closely with the Service Management team, Clinical Lead and Clinical Directors, as well as the Divisional General Managers (GM) and Associate Directors of Nursing & AHP's in triumvirate management structures. The role is expected to take an accountability for the service, including the delivery of agreed local and national quality and performance standards within budgetary and resource availability.

North Middlesex University Hospital is a busy District General Hospital based in Edmonton, North London. We have a busy Oncology service for a number of tumour sites offers multiple sub-speciality inpatient and outpatient care.

We have a subsidised staff restaurant which is open 7am -11pm 7 days a week.

The Consultant in General Surgery will work closely with the Service Management team, Clinical Lead and Clinical Directors, as well as the Divisional General Managers (GM) and Associate Directors of Nursing & AHP's in triumvirate management structures. The role is expected to take an accountability for the service, including the delivery of agreed local and national quality and performance standards within budgetary and resource availability.

A formal job plan will be agreed between each appointee and their clinical manager in line with the Job Planning Guidelines in force in the Trust. Once agreed with the clinical manager, job plans are finally signed off by the Medical Director or delegated Associate Medical Director. An indicative job plan for this post is provided below which will normally be re-assessed after 3 months of appointment to ensure it meets the needs of the service. The job plan is designed to have a balance of emergency and elective work.

The postholder will work with the Associate Directors of Nursing & AHP's to ensure that robust systems for clinical governance are implemented and maintained for all services. In particular the appointee will review outcome data (from GIRFT and National audits) and use this to drive their quality improvement agenda.
