We have an exciting opportunity available to work as a Veterinary Advisor in the Epidemiology and Risk Policy Advice team (EpiRisk).

The post holder will play a key role as part of a team led by the Veterinary Head for Epidemiology and Risk providing written and verbal evidence-based, quality assured veterinary, epidemiological and scientific advice to Ministers, CVOs, policy teams, administrative colleagues, APHA field and laboratory staff, external stakeholders and similar. To also include risk assessment, to support the development and implementation of veterinary and public health policies and measures.

**Please note**: Staff are required to work rostered on-call duties, weekends, Bank Holidays and occasional evenings. There will be occasional travel to other APHA locations. Out of hours and detached duty work may be required in the event of an outbreak or incident.

**Job description**:
As part of the Epidemiology and Risk Policy Advice Team, the post holder will work closely with the Head of EpiRisk, Head of Intervention Epidemiology, other Veterinary Advisors (VA) and scientists, field epidemiologists, Defra and Devolved Administration (DA) policy colleagues, the Department of Epidemiological Sciences and the Science Strategy and Planning Team to provide timely, fit for purpose, veterinary, scientific and epidemiological advice to UK policy teams.

The role involves a wide range of work including, but not limited to, the following:

- Provide authoritative veterinary and technical epidemiology and risk evidence and advice to customers, colleagues, partners, and important stakeholders on matters relating to the delivery of animal health and welfare policies, representing government and APHA with customers, partners and important stakeholders. To include developing post EU Exit strategies, and analytical and surveillance work to support the UK Office SPSTA and trade policy teams.
- Lead through strategic and tactical veterinary decision making, complex problem solving, risk analysis, analytical epidemiology, and incident management during and between incidents and disease outbreaks.
- Provide veterinary epidemiological evidence and advice to inform and if required manage business change programmes and continual improvements in policy development and service delivery, ensuring important internal and external stakeholders identify with, and are engaged in any change process from the outset.
- Act as a Veterinary Advisor to the Veterinary Risk Group and deputise for the Chair as required.
- Provide provision of veterinary epidemiological advice for new and emerging animal-related threats and exotic disease development, including engagement at EU and international level.
- Provide epidemiological advice to policy leads and CVOs of Defra and Devolved Administrations during notifiable disease investigations and incidents.
- Analyse, define and assess risks, evaluating their likely impact on disease spread and its control and provide advice and support to policy makers.

**Person specification**:
The post holder must have experience in the following:

- Proven track record of experience in delivery of statutory and non-statutory animal health and welfare policies, threat characterisation, and peer-reviewed risk assessment.
- Evidence of understanding of the control of disease in populations, competence in systematic data capture, analysis, and interpretation to support the investigation of animal health and welfare issues.
- Proven track record of strategic and tactical veterinary epidemiological leadership and decision-making during incident and outbreak response, complex case work, contingency planning, and business continuity.
- Experience of translating quantitative and qualitative epidemiological information into advice for policy makers.
- Experience of writing scientific papers and/or reports.
