**Main duties of the job**:

- Abstract and analyse complex and sensitive clinical information from a variety of source documentation, paper and electronic, and across a broad range of clinical specialties and translate this into a coded format in line with National Standards using ICD10 and OPCS4.
- Support the Clinical Coding Manager in the evaluation of less experienced coding staff identifying any necessary training needs
- Provide day-to day advice and guidance as well and mentoring of less experienced members of the coding team in coding rules, knowledge bases, office procedures and other related issues that result in high quality coding outcomes.
- Represent the Clinical Coding Department at multidisciplinary team, specialty and clinical directorate meetings as a coding expert and communicate complex coding rules to medical, clinical and administrative staff in order to establish the accurate diagnostic and procedural codes for each specialty.
- Feedback coding information to senior clinicians in order to influence the quality and completeness of discharge summaries and clinical notes.
- Liaise with senior clinicians to deal with complicated enquiries regarding clinical coding. Escalate on-going coding challenges to the Clinical Coding Manager.
- Assist the Clinical Coding Manager to continually improve the department’s outputs by carrying out clinical coding audits, workflow audits and by identifying areas for learning and improvement.

**Qualifications**:
**Essential criteria**:

- National Clinical Coding Qualification
- Educated to GCSE level including qualifications in English and Maths
- Training completed in ICD10/OPCS4 coding to National Coding standard

**Desirable criteria**:

- GCSE or equivalent in Human Biology
- ECDL or computer proficiency certificate

**Experience**:
**Essential criteria**:

- Proven experience as a trained clinical coder working in an NHS trust

**Desirable criteria**:

- Experience of delivering in-house training to trainee clinical coders
- Previous experience of using Medicode encoder

**Knowledge**:
**Essential criteria**:

- High level of knowledge of medical terminology, and anatomy and physiology terms
- Knowledge of clinical coding rule sand conventions
- Planning and organisational skills to ensure departmental targets are fully met

**Desirable criteria**:

- Knowledge of HRGs and their uses
- Training Skills
