An exciting opportunity has arisen within Dorset County Hospital for a Trauma Coordinator. The ideal post holder with be a registered nurse who is looking for an opportunity to work within a dynamic fast paced service taking ownership for the flow of trauma patients coming into the hospital.

The post holder is responsible for scheduling of surgery for trauma patients; ensuring maximum utilisation of available trauma theatre capacity.

To work collaboratively with the Emergency Department, Theatres and the ward areas to ensure timely access to theatres.

To assist in the provision of robust systems that ensures the safe, effective and efficient care of trauma patients.

Maintaining close liaison with patients, relatives/carers, medical teams, ward nursing teams, the anaesthetic team, operating department staff, the clinical site management team and the Directorate’s operational team.

To collate relevant information and present findings to support the establishment of systems that improve efficiency, reduce length of stay and ensure the delivery of high quality care.

To act as a resource for other health care professionals within the Trust and wider health community.

To act as a resource for nursing and medical staff requiring specialist Trauma advice.

To Liaise with the Clinical site Management & attend bed meetings daily.

The new ED and ICU is part of the Government's New Hospital Programme and will help us expand our facilities on site and support wider plans to improve our site over the next five years.

To attend the daily trauma meeting to review the previous day’s admissions and those patients awaiting a treatment plan at home.

To participate in the daily Consultant led trauma ward round; following this ward round the post holder is responsible for liaising with Theatres giving them as much information about the day’s trauma list to facilitate the smooth running of the list.

Monitor trauma surgery demand on a daily basis and liaise with the Operational Team if additional capacity is required to meet this demand; including surgeon specific cases which may cause capacity issues in the future.

To arrange dates for surgery for trauma patients awaiting admission; liaising with the Admissions Department & CSM

The post holder is responsible for arranging a ‘golden patient’ for morning trauma lists, where possible, to facilitate full utilisation including an on time start.

To ensure specialist equipment is arranged for trauma cases requiring specific loan equipment not readily available on site.

To keep trauma patients awaiting admission up to date and informed with regards to their treatment plan including giving them clear instructions.

Establish a close working relationship with the Orthopaedic Theatre Team to ensure maximum utilisation of theatre lists, if elective surgery is cancelled, by using the capacity for trauma patients where appropriate.

Attend Trauma calls to assess the need for urgent, immediate surgery and liaise directly with the Theatre Co-Ordinator.

Establish a close working relationship with the Anaesthetic team to ensure an Anaesthetist reviews all patients planned for surgery and inform them of any identified problems with the patients.

Establish a close working relationship with the Ortho-Geriatric team to ensure timely reviews of fracture neck of femur patients in line with best practice criteria.

To collate information/patient data that will support the Information Department in providing accurate data; specifically ensuring all injuries sustained by trauma patients are recorded in full and all cases meeting the criteria for inclusion in TARN as passes to the TARN data collector.

To assist with the collection of data required for the National Hip Fracture Database; including a weekly fracture neck of femur audit against best practice guidelines.
