Birmingham City Council

Homeless Family Support Officer

£20,903 - £27,041

Working 36.5 hours per week, 7 day rota between 08.00 and 20.00

**Helping homeless Birmingham families to build more positive futures**

Combine your empathy with our training to create practical support for homeless people.

**The challenge**

Homelessness can happen to anyone - and in Birmingham it’s happening to more and more people. It can lead individuals and families into a cycle that can have a profound effect on all aspects of life, from physical and mental wellbeing to sustainable employment. That’s why the Council has a homelessness strategy that cuts across different services and agencies. We’re focused on preventing people from becoming homeless but, if they do, we aim to intervene as early as possible to limit the impact of homelessness, help people recover and make them more resilient in the future.

**Your role**

You’ll support households who find themselves homeless in an emergency or crisis situation. Joining one of our homeless centres located across the city, you’ll be part of a team providing a 24-hour temporary hostel accommodation service. From helping with housing benefit claim forms and making plans for moving on to new accommodation, to carrying out room inspections and safety checks, it’s a varied role, responding to the needs of residents.

**About you**

Personal strengths and values are more important than past experience, as we offer full training and plenty of support. We look for compassionate, empathic people with good customer service and communication skills. Happy dealing with a diverse range of people, including some with vulnerabilities and multiple complex needs, you’ll be good at building trust and rapport. Basic IT skills are important as we'll ask you to write up brief case notes and work out simple budgets for others to use; that's why we ask you to complete a simple work-based activity at interview. You should also be ready to work shifts, including evenings and weekends, on a rota-based system.

If you are successful, an enhanced DBS check is required before you can start.

If you’re passionate about making a difference for households who are homeless, we’d like to hear from you.
