**Apprentice Highways Operative. **Career graded 4 - 6 (From £20,817 - 22,374pa)

**Job Purpose**:
To develop skills and abilities as an Apprentice Highways operative and to work as part of a team to deliver a best value, customer-focussed service throughout Leicestershire and occasionally, surrounding counties. You will, during the apprentice programme, work flexibly, efficiently and effectively across various teams as directed, supporting activities to maintain highways, footpaths and structures in accordance with statutory requirements.

To learn to undertake various maintenance works following safe working procedures and using equipment and power tools. The list below is indicative of the types of work, but is not exhaustive:

- Kerb laying, footway and carriageway construction, excavations, drainage, block paving, slabbing, brickwork to manholes, attend to drainage problems, strimming and verge maintenance, laying bitumen, spreading, levelling and laying of materials to lines and levels.
- Drive/operate specialist plant to perform all highways operations, and use equipment such as saws, compaction equipment etc to meet contractual requirements
- Carry out daily routine maintenance to appropriate vehicle and plant, complying with relevant legislation (e.g driver’s hours regulations, European Drivers Regulations, safe loads and weights) to ensure safe and continued use.

Use appropriate equipment and procedures to detect and locate underground services to protect operatives and prevent damage to apparatus.

To carry out duties associated with Highway Works as directed by the line manager or senior person on site. Person Specification gives breakdown of details.

To understand and comply with all Health and Safety legislation, Traffic Management requirements and Operational Highways safety and quality procedures to ensure personal safety and that of colleagues and the general public.

To maintain and retain accurate training records in accordance with the requirements of the personal development process and with the apprentice programme.

To observe the necessary health and safety precautions for all works, and compliance with safety policies and procedures as laid down by the Department and County Council.

To understand and comply with risk assessments and safe working practices, ensuring a safe working environment, having regard to statutory requirements such as Health and Safety, COSHH Regulations and Driver’s Hours Regulations.

To actively promote equality of opportunity, work towards eliminating discrimination and promote good relations between all groups of people

To learn, understand and comply with all Quality Management Systems, quality procedures and working practices.

To observe Departmental rules in relation to attendance, timekeeping and sickness scheme requirements.

To keep accurate time sheets, work sheets, stores issue notes, accident occurrence forms etc. in accordance with LCC policy and procedure.

Responsible for protecting and managing information securely, and reporting breaches or suspected information security breaches, in line with Council policies.
