The role will be suitable for doctors who have completed Foundation Programme Training or Core Medical Training particularly for those wishing to gain additional experience before commencing further training. The experience will be primarily in Haematology in the general Haematology ward and on the bone marrow transplant unit. There will be a weekend only on call commitment (9am-5pm) on a 1:5 basis. This will be to provide cover alongside registrars and consultant Haematologist to the Haematology in-patients

There will be a strong educational emphasis to these roles with involvement in our existing educational programmes (depending on individual experience to date) and you will be encouraged to be involved in audit and quality improvement projects, research and trials. Key working relationships: Consultant Haematologist, Haematology Doctors in Training, Medical Oncology Consultants, Clinical Oncology Consultants, Palliative Medicine Consultants, Matron, Ward Managers, Ward and Day Unit nursing staff, Clinical fellows IMT 1/2 doctors, GP trainees, specialty ST3+ doctors, Advanced Nurse Practitioners, Clinical Nurse Specialists.

Role Includes

Assessing patients presenting acutely with symptoms from their disorder or its treatment requiring acute symptom management and support

Ward rounds and day to day inpatient management of Haematology patients

Performing bedside practical procedures

Identifying and managing patients on clinical trials

Gaining experience in the outpatient assessment and management of patients seen in Haematology clinics, including assessing patients independently if clinically competent and determining management plans under senior supervision

Supervision and education of medical students

Our flagship specialist cancer hospital opening in central Liverpool in June 2020, supported by our hospital on the Clatterbridge Health Park in Wirral providing outpatient cancer treatment and supportive care and our radiotherapy treatment centre on the Aintree Hospital site.

Education

The applicant will be encouraged to attend teaching and Study leave for appropriate courses and exams will be considered on an individual basis in line with Trust policy. There is full access to the library, “up-to-date” online resource and online journals with an extended Athens account specific to Clatterbridge Cancer Centre.

Research

Clatterbridge Cancer Centre hosts the Merseyside and Cheshire Research Network which supports a significant portfolio of clinical trials. In addition to this there are long standing links with the University of Liverpool. This has resulted in Clatterbridge being a research focused organisation at the forefront of cancer care offering significant opportunities to our Clinical Fellows. Whilst this is not a research-based job, the successful applicant would have many opportunities to come in contact with patients participating in clinical trials research.

Other Opportunities

There are excellent opportunities to participate in peer teaching and undergraduate education within this post, with all undergraduate medical students from the University of Liverpool attending a one-week placement at the Clatterbridge Cancer Centre within their fourth year.
