About the Role
**Environment Officer - Radioactive Waste Specialist**
Are you enthusiastic and passionate about radioactive waste management or looking to develop into a new technical area from a related discipline? If you're looking for an exciting new opportunity to work and make a difference during a crucial period of change, this position may be for you
**The opportunity**
We are recruiting for an experienced, enthusiastic and dedicated Radioactive Waste Management Specialist to work within the EDF Radioactive Waste Management group (part of the Safety, Health, Environment and Quality function). This team maintains radioactive waste governance, undertakes oversight and provides assurance to the business. The role provides key technical and specialist advice to all EDF nuclear sites within the UK, supporting operations, decommissioning and new build.
If this sounds like a role for you, we would love to hear from you
**Pay, Benefits and Culture**
We offer a competitive salary ranging from £61,730 - £95,993 with terms and conditions covered by the EDF Collective Agreement. The starting salary will be dependent on your competence, experience and qualifications.
At EDF, everyone’s welcome. We strive to create an inclusive and diverse environment where everyone has a voice and where you feel confident being yourself. We’re committed to equality, diversity and inclusion. We’d like our future workforce to have an equal gender balance, represent a broad mix of people from minority ethnic backgrounds, LGBTQ+, those with a disability and supporting social mobility.
We’ll value the difference you bring and offer opportunities for you to thrive and succeed.
**What you’ll be doing**
We are looking for an experienced professional to join our Radioactive Waste Management team, reporting to the Group Head. In this role, you will be part of a dynamic and diverse team with expertise across the nuclear industry. You will take the lead on specific work packages, ensuring compliance and driving excellence in radioactive waste management. This includes supporting nuclear sites in meeting their legal obligations under the Radioactive Substances Regulation (RSR) and Nuclear Site Licence Conditions, while managing technically challenging projects.
You will be responsible for developing and implementing governance arrangements that enhance performance, providing oversight and insight across the fleet, delivering training, managing external contracts, and offering technical support.
The role also involves advising on and developing strategic BAT/BPM assessment methodologies, contributing to waste strategies that deliver operational and decommissioning benefits, and helping to build sustainable expertise across the organisation.
Opportunities for broader involvement within the Environmental Safety and Sustainability Branch may also be available to support your long-term career development.
**Who you are**
You will have a robust understanding of policy and regulatory requirements relating to the management of solid radioactive waste in the UK and practical experience in the processes used to ensure that nuclear practices are optimised and justified to minimise risks to the public and the environment. You’ll be able to understand and have experience in the use of existing Lower Activity Waste processing and disposal practises and be familiar with the requirements for management of Higher Activity Wastes. A broad understanding of radioactive waste management outside of EDF and a proven ability to identify, and implement, best practice are desirable attributes.
Ideally you will be able to demonstrate a bias for action with a proven track record in managing stakeholders’ expectations, experience in the specification, delivery and oversight of technical work from suppliers and have an exceptional safety and quality management focus.
Curious by nature, you’ll have excellent critical analytical skills with the ability to assimilate technical information and make sound judgements, alongside clear, concise communication skills and good interpersonal skills. You’ll need to demonstrate how you build effective relationships with and influence different stakeholders, such as: stations; other departments; external suppliers; industry working groups, and regulators. The ability to challenge in a constructive manner is key.
Applications close for this role on 10th September 2025.
