**Job summary**:
This is a lively and exciting role in a fast-paced operational military headquarters. Working alongside and advising the military on the public presentation of the UK’s overseas military operations. The successful applicant will join a team of five media experts responsible for producing media, communications and planning guidance and planning support for global military operations.

**About the Permanent Joint Headquarters (PJHQ)**

PJHQ is led by a 3-Star military officer, the Chief of Joint Operations, and is the tri-service military headquarters from which UK overseas operations are planned and overseen. At PJHQ, we take direction from the strategic level, translating it into objectives, outcomes, and direction for our deployed commanders. J9 is a joint civilian-military team that sits at the forefront of this effort, crafting the planning, management, and delivery of UK military deployments around the globe.

The wider team as a whole are responsible for providing fused policy, legal and media advice to support the UK’s deployed overseas operations and delivering the Department of State functions for the headquarters. Led by a Senior Civil Servant, J9 comprises joint civilian-military teams broken down by geographic region: Africa, Broader Middle East (BME), Europe and Indo-Asia-Pacific (IAP) and function, legal and media. Being at the forefront of enabling and supporting these operations is challenging but extremely rewarding, and we are looking for enthusiastic, hard-working, and resilient individuals to come and join our team.

The post is advertised at 37 hours per week.

**Job description**:
This is a busy and exciting role in a fast-moving operational headquarters. Working alongside and advising the military on the public presentation of the UK’s overseas military operations. The post holder will be part of a team of six, producing media and communications guidance and planning support to global military operations.

The post holder will be responsible for coordinating the operational media output for Defence Engagements in the Africa region. Additionally, the role will provide support to the PJHQ Social Media output, through collating stories, and liaising with contacts to ensure amplification. The role will provide administrative support for a range of media related and more general office functions and act as a central point of contact for PJHQ’s input to MOD’s Directorate of Defence Communication campaigns.

The post holder provides operational media direction and be part of the team offering media advice to the Chief of Joint Operations, the wider HQ, deployed military commanders and other key stakeholders across government.

Working with colleagues in the Directorate of Defence Communications, and deployed media officers, you will develop content, clear imagery, manage breaking news events, and plan and deliver media events and visits in operational theatres.

There will be opportunities to deputise for the Senior Media Adviser and the role requires the whole team to take part in an on-call out of hours rota. This is maintained to respond to breaking operational and urgent issues and additional hours are compensated.

**Person specification**:
You will be responsible for:

- Leading on the media output for one of PJHQ’s geographic areas - Africa, workload will depend on the range of military operations underway at the time.
- Finding opportunities for media embeds good stories or creative campaigns.
- Planning and delivering communications activity in all media forms, including social and digital media, film, radio, television, and print.
- Provide support to the PJHQ Social Media output, through collating stories, and liaising with contacts to ensure amplification.
- Support the media adviser with social media output for Defence Ops
- Provide administrative support for PJHQ J9 Media and lead on internal PJHQ communications, HQ Visits & creation of internal media products.
- PJHQ’s Internal communications lead for the Ops and Exercises page on Def Net
- Manage the J9 Media SharePoint area.
- Deputise for the media adviser if required.
- All J9 media staff share the on-call duty responsibility which, when rostered, requires the post holder to be contactable out-of-hours and at weekends.
- Previous experience of working with the military and communications is desirable but not essential for this role.
