The School of Nursing & Midwifery have an exciting opportunity to join an expanding, successful and multidisciplinary School Management Team as a Head of Department. We are proud of our established position as a large provider of nurse & midwifery education in the Midlands. Our existing provision includes a range of pre-registration nurse education education which adhere to the necessary PSRB standards and requirements. To support this work, we are seeking a Head of Department (Dame Edith Cavell Team) to continue leading and managing an excellent already existing team whilst working closely with the HoD of the Dame Ellen Musson Department for Adult Nursing. The post holder will provide effective leadership & management across all of the department activities, ensuring that students, staff and partners are able to benefit from the department progression and success. Importantly you will also develop a vision to enhance our provision and further develop our research. You will be a key member of School Management Team, working alongside our enthusiastic, passionate and dedicated senior team.
We are seeking to appoint an exceptional individual to this crucial role, with an in-depth knowledge of nurse education and the wider policy landscape. You will have an understanding of the challenges and opportunities facing the sector and the many complexities involved in delivering a quality teaching and learning experience.
As you will be leading and managing an existing team of academics, you will have had appropriate experience of working within nurse education and Higher Education and will have enjoyed success in leading and motivating teams.
You must be educated to post-graduate level and ideally should have a PhD/Doctorate, or working toward completion. You will be able to demonstrate the capacity to make a valuable contribution to the body of practice-based research in the discipline.
The successful applicant will be an NMC registrant (of any field) with extensive experience of nursing practice and in the delivery of education and training, to join our committed team of academics.
**Through effective leadership and management as HoD, your main activities and responsibilities will be**:
**Student learning experience**: you will be working closely with your team, and other HoDs to continue to ensure the work that we do enhances the student experience.
**Research, enterprise and scholarship**: you will be expected to engage in working towards implementation of the research strategy and work with others towards fostering engagement with research and evidence based practice at all levels.
**Managing people and resources**:you will be expected to effectively line manage your team in accordance with BCU policies, undertaking regular appraisal reviews of staff as appropriate, ensuring clear performance expectations and supporting personal development plans are agreed, as well as encouraging the continuous professional development of staff within your area of responsibility. You will take responsibility for organising and deployment of resources within own areas of responsibility. As an academic leader you will participate in the University’s success through engagement with University strategies ensuring decisions are taken forward effectively by all staff they lead, enabling, supporting and celebrating individual achievement.
**Pastoral care**: you will be expected to undertake personal tutoring and academic assessor role provide support to students by using listening, interpersonal and pastoral care skills to deal with sensitive issues and their individual needs. You will sign post effectively to wider support services available to our students. You will support your teams and colleagues in doing the same.
**Academic administration**: as a leading academic, you will be contributing to the efficient management and administration of the School, Faculty, the University and the wider academic community by undertaking administrative duties as are recognised by the University as within the remit of academic staff.
- Current NMC registration (any field) and a higher professional qualification, normally a doctoral degree
- Proven academic leadership, with experience of developing teaching curriculum and managing quality enhancement in a HE environment
- Recognised achievement in scholarship, research and leading edge practice at a national (and preferably international) level
- Evidence of a leadership and development role in high quality teaching at all levels
- Demonstrable commitment to improving student experience - using a variety of delivery techniques to enthuse and engage students
