The Communications Directorate at DHSC leads the conversation about health and care by engaging people through innovative communications, supporting improvements to the health of the nation and the running of the NHS.
We use digital channels to inform the public about our work which is a key part of our communications approach. The Digital Content and Platforms team play an essential role in delivering content for GOV.UK that puts the user at the heart of our work.
The team delivers a wide range of content on GOV.UK including consultations, guidance and reports. The team reviews, edits and designs this content to ensure it's in plain English, based on user needs and follows the GOV.UK style guide. This in turn ensures content is always accessible and easy to understand for all audiences.
They also produce content for internal audiences on the DHSC intranet - again making sure the material meets the needs of our users.
This is a writing and editing role, not a graphic design role.
**Job description**:
Our content designers work across GOV.UK and our intranet, ensuring our content is accessible and easy to understand for our users.
As a content designer you will work with colleagues across the department to advocate for user-centred, accessible content.
- review, edit and write content for GOV.UK and the intranet
- identify user needs and ensure content is user-focused
- make sure content is in plain English and consistently meets publishing standards, following the GOV.UK style guide
- understand how to design content that meets accessibility requirements for public sector websites
- develop excellent working relationships across DHSC
- publish content to strict deadlines using content management systems and evaluate the impact
- work with colleagues to co-ordinate digital content production
- engage with and contribute to the cross-government content community
**Person specification**:
You will need to demonstrate you have:
- content design experience, with proven ability to create (edit and/or write) content that is accessible, in plain English and based on user needs (knowledge of GOV.UK preferred)
- experience in working with content publishing systems and an understanding of basic HTML and markdown
- the ability to manage multiple content tasks at once
- excellent communication and negotiation skills
- the ability to work to tight deadlines and to adapt to changing priorities
- experience of using a style guide to produce consistent content
- the ability to work flexibly with team members to deliver shared goals
