At Derby Adult Learning Service, we’re committed to providing high-quality, inclusive learning opportunities for the citizens of Derby. As a Family Learning Tutor, you’ll work primarily with adults—parents and carers who are looking to improve their own skills, support their children’s learning, and take positive steps toward further education or employment.
You’ll deliver engaging sessions in schools, family hubs, and outreach centres across the city—supporting adults to build skills in English, maths, digital literacy, while also helping them understand and support their child’s education and development.
We're looking for someone who:

- Holds a recognised teaching qualification (minimum Level 5)
- Has experience or confidence in delivering learning to adults
- Can adapt their teaching to meet a wide range of learner needs, including SEND
- Has good digital and interpersonal skills
- Has some knowledge of the school curriculum and how families can support their child’s education
- Is happy to work flexibly in a variety of community and outreach settings

We’re looking for passionate and approachable tutors to deliver engaging, tailored learning sessions that support parents and carers to build skills, boost confidence, and better support their children’s education.
These programmes are designed to respond to the specific needs of families—such as building confidence in English, maths, digital skills, as well as improving understanding of the school curriculum. While few classes include children, the overall aim is to support adults to strengthen their ability to positively influence their children's learning and development.
Through their own progression in learning, parents and carers are empowered to become positive role models—raising aspirations within the family and taking meaningful steps towards further education, volunteering, or employment. This approach not only helps parents to support their children's attainment more effectively but also promotes long-term generational impact through improved confidence, skills, and opportunities.

**About You**
To be successful in this role, you’ll ideally have...

Innovative Teaching Approach: Bring fresh ideas to the table, constantly exploring creative and effective teaching methods to engage and inspire our learners
Learner-Centric Teaching Style: Put our learners at the heart of everything you do, tailoring your teaching to accommodate various learning styles and needs
Empathetic Mentoring Skills: Understand the challenges adult learners face, and support them with empathy and patience every step of the way.
Recent experience:
Planning and delivering family learning sessions that help parents support their child’s learning, particularly in reading, writing, phonics, or school-related literacy activities.
Adapting content for adults with different levels of ability, including learners with SEND or low prior educational attainment.
Working collaboratively with schools, family hubs, or community partners to engage and retain learners.
Applicants must a teaching qualification at level 5 or above.
