Clinical Fellow in General Paediatrics

This is a non-training post equivalent to ST3+ level
The General Paediatric Department roles and activities include
- Assessment of referrals from General Practitioners and the Emergency Department.
- Inpatient management of all acute and chronic general paediatric medical conditions, including child protection issues.
- Advice to other services within the Trust about general medical problems, child protection issues, and co-ordination of care for children with complex multidisciplinary problems.
- Overall responsibility for general medical admissions to PICU whether from the district or elsewhere in the region, in close collaboration with the intensive care medical staff
- Outpatient management of new and follow up patients
- High level of education, appraisal, and support of doctors in training, and teaching of undergraduate medical students from Birmingham University
- There is unparalled opportunity to care for children with a complete range of serious and minor medical illness, psychological and safeguarding issues.
- High level of consultant support with 2 consultants of the week (3 in winter) and consultant evening shifts for the acute admissions.
- Out of hours general paediatrics trainees contribute to the hospital at night team covering the admissions or inpatients on rotation with speciality colleagues.

Forward Thinking Birmingham (FTB) Mental Health Services are a unique, innovative community and inpatient mental health partnership. Alongside partners FTB offers care pathways of mental health assessment and treatment for young people aged 0-25 years old.
The post holder will be expected to undertake middle grade-level clinical duties within the department of general paediatrics, under supervision by the consultant team.
The post holder will be supported through regular meetings with an allocated educational supervisor.
Clinical Responsibilities
This post has arisen due to vacancies in the junior doctor rota at middle grade level
**The specific responsibilities would include**:
- Participation in the general paediatric ward round, assisting the consultants and supervising the junior team.
- Covering the RMO2 role, which includes carrying the crash bleep, taking referrals from specialty teams requesting general paediatric review and conducting child protection medical assessments
- Twilight shifts ( 2pm-10pm) covering the Clinical Decision Unit alongside a consultant
- Covering RMO1 role, which involves assessing acute referrals from primary care and the emergency department
- Participation in the Hospital at Night rota (responsibilities appropriate to level of experience and competency) - out of hours - evening, nights and weekend

Training and Education
The post holder will be supervised by one of the Consultant Paediatricians.
Although this is not a clinical training post, the appropriate ongoing clinical education of the post holder will be actively supported by the department. Departmental and hospital teaching occurs daily which the post holder will be encouraged to attend. Training which will aid the post holder in obtaining higher qualifications and a subsequent training post (e.g. in CV writing, interview skills) will be available, if appropriate. The postholder is supported in preparing, submitting and presenting their work at national and international conferences.
This post would be particularly suitable for doctors studying for the MRCPCH clinical exam.
