Clinical Fellow in Paediatric Orthopedics and Trauma

Birmingham B, United Kingdom Birmingham Women's and Children's NHS Foundation Trust Full time

This post will provide subspecialty training in the generality of Paediatric Orthopaedics and Paediatric Orthopaedic Trauma. While the bulk of the training will be in Paediatric Orthopaedics (Elective and Trauma), exposure to Paediatric Spinal Deformity and Paediatric Orthopaedic Oncology, particularly in theatre, will also be achieved.

The post commencement date will be February 2026 for the duration of 6-12 months.

The post is suitable for a senior trainee with FRCS (Orth) or equivalent who wishes to pursue a career in Paediatric Orthopaedics. The post may also suit CESR trainees requiring a period of exposure to Paediatric Orthopaedics to satisfy the requirements for entry onto the specialist register but for whom Paediatric Orthopaedics is not a career aspiration. Depending upon numbers of applicants, consideration may also be given to more junior orthopaedic trainees, post-MRCS or equivalent, who can demonstrate sufficient experience in orthopaedics to justify appointment to the post.

The successful candidate will spend most of their time at the Birmingham Children's Hospital site but may be required to attend out-reach clinics, with the Paediatric Orthopaedic Consultants, at one or more of the surrounding hospitals at which we provide services. The postholder will participate in the 1 in 7 non-resident orthopaedic middle grade out-of-hours on call rota at BCH.

It is expected that the postholder will take part in the academic activities of the unit and assist in teaching. There will be opportunities for clinical research under the supervision of the Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeons and ample time for such research. The appointee will be expected to produce at least one publication and one national presentation during the appointment. The postholder will also have the opportunity to be involved in teaching undergraduates during their Orthopaedic modules.

The Paediatric Orthopaedic Department at BCH holds a monthly Audit/MDT meeting which the postholder will be expected to attend throughout their time with us. The department also holds further Audit meetings to coincide with the Trust Audit mornings. It is the responsibility of the three Paediatric Orthopaedic Fellows to collate and present any M+M data at those meetings. The Department's monthly Audit/MDT and Clinical Teaching meeting takes place on the 4th Thursday of the month.

The postholder would be welcome to attend other clinic and theatre sessions during the week to see interesting cases should they wish.

The postholder would be expected to cross cover certain clinics and lists to ensure an EWTR/New Deal compliant rota. Details of such cross cover will be available when the 6 monthly rota is finalized in advance of the postholder's start date.
