The Henry Royce Institute (Royce) is an EPSRC-funded national institute with its Hub at The University of Manchester. The Institute has spokes at ten Partner and Associate Partner organisations: the Universities of Sheffield, Leeds, Liverpool, Cambridge, Cranfield, Strathclyde, Oxford and Imperial College London, as well as at the UK Atomic Energy Authority and National Nuclear Laboratory. The CTO will be expected to develop particularly close working relationships with industry and public research organisations alongside academic institutions and will play a major role in supporting use of the platforms to accelerate technology translation through small to large industrial organisations as well as supporting the wider research community. A key aspect of promoting and gaining maximum use of our infrastructure is an associated comprehensive portfolio of training programmes - the CTO role will therefore oversee Royce’s training and skills strategy and have a substantial input to the development of our technical staff.

We are seeking a research leader with over 5 years’ experience of strategic oversight and development of a substantial research laboratory/capability/organisation engaged with industrial and academic users. They will have an established research track record in a materials science related discipline as well as significant experience in delivering major experimental programmes across multiple platforms working across academia and industry. Demonstrated excellence in leadership and management of diverse research staff working with multiple stakeholders is essential.
