- Job description- This is an exciting opportunity for an energetic ‘people’ person to join our Flood Resilience Team where you will plan and deliver engagement activities to help communities prepare for flooding.
You’ll have the opportunity to work in a variety of settings across Kent, South London & East Sussex, including schools, community groups, urban and rural areas.
We use many different methods such as posters, videos, magazine articles, social media, and face to face events, which you will need to help create, to ensure people understand their risk and know what actions they can take.
You will develop relationships with communities at risk, empowering them to prepare and become resilient by developing flood plans, recruiting Flood Wardens, and promoting our Flood Warning Service. You will also support communities who have been affected by flooding.
You’ll work with internal teams and external partners and customers to achieve the Environment Agency’s vision of ‘A nation ready and resilient to climate change, focusing on flood risk.
You’ll also have the opportunity to work across the other functions of the team to support important areas of work, making improvements to the Flood Warning Service and enhancing the way we plan and respond to incidents.
Responding to incidents is a central part of what we do. You will be required to have an incident role and make yourself available to respond to incidents or provide business continuity support during an incident. This may attract an additional payment and full training and alternative working arrangements will be available to support you with your incident role.
- The team- The Flood Resilience Team forms a key part of the Environment Agency's response to flooding in Kent, South London & East Sussex. We work to ensure that we, our partners, and communities are prepared for flooding, and can respond effectively before, during and after a flood.
We do this by building resilient communities, supporting the Area Incident Team with our flood incident arrangements, managing our Flood Warning Service, and working with multiple teams and partners.
- Experience/skills required- You will be:

- an excellent communicator, self-assured in engaging with people within different communities, able to develop networks with colleagues, partners.
- well organised, have excellent attention to detail, excellent plain English skills and able to write in fun and engaging way
- able to work as part of a team, by yourself, and prioritise an interesting and varied workload.
- a quick-learner, with a strong customer-focus, and a desire to make a difference.
- good at working under pressure, working flexibly and at pace; sometimes the work can be responsive and unplanned after flooding incidents.
- be a motivated self-starter, thinking innovatively to deliver information and outcomes.

You will ideally also be able to demonstrate:

Understanding of the Environment Agency’s role in managing flood risk.
An understanding of fluvial, coastal, tidal and groundwater processes and our Flood Warning service.
An understanding of different communication methods and styles.
