**Job Purpose**:
The Locum Consultant in General Medicine will play a key role in delivering high-quality care to patients with a wide range of acute and chronic medical conditions. The consultant will work within the General Medicine department and collaborate closely with multidisciplinary teams to manage patients from admission to discharge. You will be responsible for overseeing the care provided by junior doctors and other clinical staff, ensuring that patient safety and standards of care are maintained. The role also involves teaching, supervision, and participation in departmental audits and clinical governance activities.
**Key Responsibilities:Clinical Duties**:
- **Patient Care**:
- Lead the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of patients admitted to the general medical wards.
- Provide senior clinical input for inpatient and outpatient care, particularly for complex cases.
- Ensure timely decision-making regarding investigations, management plans, and discharge.
- Participate in daily ward rounds, including the review of new admissions and ongoing care.
- Provide clinical leadership and work closely with other consultants, nursing staff, and allied health professionals.
- Attend to emergency admissions and manage acute medical cases during on-call shifts.
- **On-Call Responsibilities**:
- Participate in the general medical on-call rota, which may include evenings, weekends, and nights.
- Supervise and support junior medical staff during on-call shifts.
- Respond to acute medical emergencies and provide expert advice to the medical team.
- **Outpatient Clinics**:
- Conduct general medical outpatient clinics, reviewing and managing patients with ongoing chronic conditions.
- Ensure appropriate follow-up and referral for further specialist care when necessary.
**Leadership & Supervision**:
- Provide clinical supervision and support to junior doctors, including specialist registrars, core trainees, and foundation doctors.
- Offer guidance in the management of difficult or complex cases.
- Ensure that junior doctors and other clinical staff maintain high standards of patient care and follow best practices.
**Teaching & Training**:
- Participate in the teaching and training of junior medical staff, medical students, and other healthcare professionals.
- Contribute to regular clinical teaching sessions, grand rounds, and departmental meetings.
- Act as an educational supervisor for trainees, providing mentorship and support.
**Clinical Governance & Quality Improvement**:
- Take part in clinical audits, quality improvement projects, and contribute to continuous improvement in clinical practices within the department.
- Ensure compliance with NHS Trust policies on patient safety, infection control, and data protection.
- Participate in risk management and contribute to incident reporting and resolution processes.
**Research & Development**:
- Support the Trust's research initiatives by participating in clinical trials, studies, or other research activities where relevant.
- Stay updated with the latest advancements in general medicine by engaging in continuous professional development (CPD).
**Qualifications & Experience:Essential**:
- **Medical Degree (MBBS or equivalent)** from a recognized institution.
- **Full GMC Registration** with a license to practice as a consultant.
- **CCT (Certificate of Completion of Training)** in General Internal Medicine or equivalent.
- A minimum of **5 years post-graduate experience** in General Medicine.
- Evidence of expertise in managing a wide range of acute and chronic medical conditions.
- **Right to work in the UK** (for non-UK applicants).
**Desirable**:
- Membership or Fellowship of the **Royal College of Physicians** (MRCP, FRCP, or equivalent).
- Prior experience working as a consultant within the NHS.
- Experience in leading quality improvement projects and clinical audits.
- Published research in the field of General Medicine.
