Professional leadership 1.Provide a credible source of specialist clinical knowledge and advice, taking an active role in self-development, reviewing own performance, identifying own needs, and taking active measures to meet those needs. 2.Provide on-going education for patients and their families about all aspects of their illness/treatment. 3.Participate in the formal and informal teaching within the hospital to a range of health care professionals and contribute to educational and training programmes as requested / appropriate. 4.Participate, where appropriate, in the education of patients and the general public.
5.Maintain an awareness and understanding of relevant, up to date research studies within the clinical field. 6.Take a supportive role in developing practice through specific research and audit projects. 7.Collect and analyse information related to patient and carer satisfaction and evaluation of the service. 8.Share and promote good practice through involvement with local groups, including presentations, publication, and dissemination of role evaluation.
9.Monitor and reflect on own performance, identifying and addressing own professional needs. 10.Responds and contributes to clinical governance initiatives. EDUCATION AND TRAINING The post holder will /work towards: 1.Participate / facilitate study days relating to Lung Cancer. 2.Act as an educational resource on lung cancer care for healthcare professionals both in hospital and the community.
3.Provide education to patients and carers in relation to lung cancer. 4.Incorporate teaching and learning principles into professional practice. 5.Act as a role model or mentor when appropriate. 6.Evaluate and impart new methodology and practice in relation to the care of the patient with lung cancer.
7.Continually develop educational resources in lung cancer. 8.Maintain own professional development and maintain clinical practice through regular updating of knowledge and clinical skills. 9.Ensure own education is compliant with Cancer Peer Review and Standards. RESEARCH, DEVELOPMENT AND AUDIT The post holder will: 1.Be involved in local/national research proposals to develop lung cancer services nationally.
2.Disseminate research findings locally and, if required, at national level to produce an evidence base for lung cancer nursing on behalf of the Trust and the Cancer Network. 3.To be aware of and disseminate recent advances in lung cancer. 4.Participate in the collection of statistical information to inform the operation activities of the lung cancer service, specifically in relation to the National Lung cancer Audit (NLCA), working with Cancer Data Manager as required 5.Establish an accurate record keeping system for personal use and contribute to the development of care and treatment planning by recording in medical and nursing notes. 6.Participate in the developments of evidence-based policies, guidelines, and protocols to improve standards of lung cancer care.
7.Identify and contribute to audit projects 8.Contribute to the National and Regional development of lung cancer services through activities within West Midlands cancer alliance Lung EAG and the National Lung Cancer Nurses Forum. COMMUNICATION The post holder will: 1.Communicate sensitive and distressing information to patients and relatives daily. This may include information concerning diagnosis, prognosis, recurrence, or impending death. 2.Utilise a wide range of advanced communication skills to address the complex needs of patients and their families.
3.Assess barriers to understanding during complex interactions. 4.Communicate the special needs of patients and families to those responsible for their direct care. 5.Facilitate communication between staff, patient, and families, reflecting professional standards and the development of a therapeutic relationship between the patient, carer, and members of the multi-disciplinary team. 6.Liaise between all professional and non-professional carers both in the hospital and community who care for patients affected by lung cancer.
7.Develop networks through all directorates and community. SKILLS The post holder will / work towards: 1.Use advanced skills to make patient and family needs assessments and deliver expert care. 2.Maintain up-to-date knowledge of national developments within lung cancer. 3.Maintain knowledge base to provide clinical palliative care.
4.Provide a non-pharmaceutical intervention to help patients with problems of breathlessness. 5.Provide an intervention aimed at reducing anxiety and depression in patients with lung cancer and helping them to cope with the illness. Professional development 1.Contribute to the development of team objectives. 2.To be aware of the impact of service changes across the organisation 3.Contribute to the monitoring and control of expenditure and the use of resources.
