Manchester is a city with a rich sporting heritage, being the home to some of the most iconic and successful football clubs in the world, several national governing bodies of sport, national training squads, the birthplace of some of the UK’s most decorated athletes and the host city of premier sporting events such as the Cricket World Cup, UEFA Women’s Euro, World Taekwondo Grand Prix, the upcoming Rugby League World Cup and Para Swimming World Championships.
Known as a global sporting hub, and one of the best top ten cities in the world globally for sport, the city-region boasts a sporting infrastructure second to none and a commitment to world-class event delivery. The hugely successful legacy of the 2002 Commonwealth Games has provided the city with an extensive range of sporting facilities which has been enhanced in recent years following significant capital investment, making Manchester the UK’s sporting capital.
Whilst sport and physical activity form an integral part of Manchester’s identity, the reality is that health inequalities and hurdles to participation persist, just as they do throughout the country. MCRactive, therefore, plays an important role in the city, working with our partners to remove barriers, widen access, and to help ensure everyone in Manchester lead healthier lifestyles through sport and physical activity.
Our 10-year sport and physical activity strategy is the result of an extensive public consultation exercise undertaken by the city in which we engaged with thousands of residents, partners, and multiple stakeholders to produce seven interrelated themes around what sport and physical activity could look like for them and our city in the future.
We now seek to appoint our first ever Independent Chair of the Board to help us deliver more positive health outcomes for the people of Manchester. Working closely with our new incoming CEO and other members of the Board and executive, they will play a critical role in helping deliver our strategy as well as engaging with key partners and external stakeholders. Providing invaluable support, they will help us to ensure impact within the organisations and communities we serve.
