We know the road map; we now need somebody who can drive towards the highest level of safety maturity across Gas Transmission, whilst taking a lead on non-site based hazards and risks.

The role is a fundamental part of the Gas Transmission safety and health team with focus on the implementation and maintenance of a robust health, safety and wellbeing framework, prevention of incidents, driving of safe behaviours and the enablement of excellent safety leadership.

You will act as a technical expert for non-operational safety advice and ensure SHE systems meet legislative requirements as well as align with National Grid policies and business values.

**Key Accountabilities**:

- To influence and provide expert advice on safety strategy development to non-operational areas of the business to deliver legislative compliance and promote continuous improvement.
- Lead on allocated SHE projects with a view to drive continuous improvement across the business
- Engage with the non-operational areas of the Gas Transmission business to enable them to manage their day to day SHE responsibilities.
- Lead, or support as required, the development and review of allocated SHE Procedures and Standards including associated training and assessment packages.
- Management of business systems such as Display Screen Equipment, Safe Driving and any other identified risk areas affecting the business.
- Expert support to incident investigations to establish root causes, providing expert advice and guidance to the investigation team including at ‘Advanced Level’ where appropriate.
- Work with the business to ensure that lessons are learned from safety related incidents and embedded into our processes.
- Support the promotion of a mature safety culture, incl. safety survey and Our Safety Ambition Steering Group contribution
- Lead on the implementation of innovation and best practice seeking opportunity for consistency of approach to enable safety responsibility and accountability to reside with line managers and staff
- Actively engage and positively influence staff, managers, contractors and union representatives on SHE performance and risk management and how behaviour has a direct link with them.
- Engage with the supported area of the business to implement/deliver and monitor identified projects and programmes.
- Pro-actively manage, develop & maintain positive relationships with external stakeholders, in particular the HSE, Local Authorities and Unions where required.
- Produce detailed reports and briefing notes on specific SHE topics.
- Provide feedback to the business on observed and identified SHE compliance issues.
- Develop and monitor Health & Safety measures of success and Gas Transmission that drive the Gas Transmission business to continuous improvement
- Provision of UK & Gas Transmission SHE non-site Safety Performance MI
- Facilitate SHE leadership visits and feedback

**About You**:
Expert working knowledge of SHE legislation with demonstrable experience of advising and working in a fast paced and changing environment
Expert working knowledge of Health & Safety legislation, safety management systems, National Grid policy, procedure and best practice in relation to Health & Safety management
Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to communicate and influence at all levels of the business and with external regulatory bodies and peer organisations.
Ability to demonstrate sound constructive decision making abilities.
Resilient with the confidence to challenge behaviours and issues.
Ability to positively influence stakeholders to achieve a common goal (ie. TU’s and SRC)
Demonstrable event management experience.

**Qualifications**:
**Essential (at appointment)**:

- NEBOSH general certificate - in occupational safety and health
- Valid UK driving licence
- Strong leadership & interpersonal skills, with the ability to think creatively at the strategic level, make decisions and deploy solutions to the benefit of the business.
- An excellent communicator, capable of effective interaction with personnel at all levels and external bodies. Effective in managing and developing working relationships.
- Experience of managing improvement projects, with detailed practical knowledge and conceptual understanding of Health & Safety legislation, innovation and best practice

**Desirable**:

- NEBOSH Diploma (or equivalent) or an engineering degree in relevant discipline or Health & Safety experience
- Professional membership of a relevant professional body
