The team has evolved over the last few years to incorporate all SPEN’s community-based funding activity, this includes the Net Zero Fund that was launched in 2023 and replaced the Green Economy Fund. The team is also responsible for the development of Community Benefits offering which is expected to be established in the next year.

SP Energy Networks’ (SPEN) £5million ‘Transmission Net Zero Fund’ is helping vulnerable communities who face barriers in taking part in the Net Zero transition, to join the low carbon journey. The fund has been designed based on what communities said they needed - additional support in exploring Net Zero technology solutions to address local needs, along with technical expertise to formalise plans. The fund, which supports community organisations and not for profit organisations with their decarbonisation ambitions, operates in three phases, providing information to communities, feasibility support and funding. With over £1 million of funding already granted, and bespoke support delivered to help communities develop Net Zero plans, the fund is enabling community groups to deliver projects that drive decarbonisation in their area. The £5m fund has so far resulted in 16 tailored workshops and 12 projects receiving feasibility support and 24 projects awarded funding to complete their projects. All projects need to be effectively managed to ensure that SPEN’s reputation is protected.
