The successful applicant will join an active sea-going oceanographic group at the University of Southampton with expertise in physical oceanography and ocean mixing. You will have the opportunity to engage with the vibrant oceanographic community at the School of Ocean and Earth Science and the National Oceanography Centre and work closely with our national and international partners. We are strongly motivated to understand the role of small-scale ocean physics in the climate system. For this purpose, we strive to unlock the use of ground-breaking autonomous ocean observations to unravel the impact of small-scale ocean physics on large-scale ocean and climate dynamics. By joining us, you will advance the field of finescale ocean dynamics by using novel measurements and theory to uncover new knowledge about the role of mixing in ocean circulation and ventilation.
The post is a fixed-term appointment for 24 months and is part of an ERC Consolidator Grant awarded to Bieito Fernández Castro by the EU’s Horizon Europe Programme.
We invite applicants who hold a PhD or equivalent professional qualifications and experience in oceanography, or a related field, with experience in the analysis and processing of fine and microscale oceanographic data, preferably from autonomous platforms. We value knowledge of inverse methods to estimate ocean circulation and mixing. You will demonstrate a good knowledge of ocean dynamics, particularly at fine and small scales, strong quantitative and problem-solving skills, and excellent communication skills.
We are committed to equality, diversity and inclusion and welcome applicants who support our mission of inclusivity.
