We are looking for an experienced trustworthy, motivated and reliable Caretaker/Janitor that can function well as part of a team. You must have very effective organizational and communication skills. As we are a local disability charity you must be community focused, with a positive compassionate nature.
The Caretaker component of this job role is essential, taking care of our centre and ensuring the building and the environment is safe, secure and hygienic. We have a public café as well as many activities which the public and/or members attend. It is therefore essential that you are able to interact in the best interest of our charity, with a diverse range of individuals.
There may be a driving component of this job role which is to help meet the needs of customers by picking up and dropping off members in a timely, safe and courteous manner as well as operate our disability access minibus safely, experience of driving a minibus is essential. You will also be driving our other smaller transportation when needed. We operate a meal delivery service which you may cover when we don’t have volunteer drivers to do so.
As a caretaker/janitor, your typical duties will include, but are not limited to:
- Key holder with unlocking/locking the centre
- Health and Safety Checks, including testing alarm systems and interacting with the appropriate contractors
- Be aware of the daily, weekly, monthly timetable of events, activities, clubs and hall hires.
- Set up/clear areas where activities, clubs and hall hires are on
- Planning the best routes
- Driving the vehicle safely, stopping at designated points
- Supporting passengers, some with a disability, to get on and off the vehicle
- “odd jobs” needing done around the centre.
- Performing vehicle checks
- Keeping the vehicle tidy.
- Logging daily mileage and reporting any faults and refuelling.
- Ensuring the building is secure whilst on shift
- Maintenance of the building and its perimeter, reporting any issues to management
- Flexibility, e.g. to cover holiday or sickness, shift work to cover events
- Delivery of food and collection of money.
- Ensure all areas of centre are clean and tidy
- Return any vans to the external secure car park that are not in use as well as ensuring any vehicles needed for the centre are parked at the centre carpark
- Ensuring bins are emptied daily and cleaned on a weekly basis
- Arranging and taking vehicles to garages for any maintenance needed
Driving experience and a background in customer care, disability, health care or social work is essential.
You will need a full clean driving licence. You will need to be at least 25 years old to drive due to our insurance restrictions. Your driving licence must have a category D1 to enable you to drive minibuses with up to 16 seats.
If the circumstances require, you may be called upon to carry out other duties as appropriate.
Certificates in the following areas an advantage but not essential as training can be given.
