Head of Safety, Health and Environment

**Job Overview**
- We are looking for a proactive and solution focussed individual who is keen to develop and drive the HSQE agenda within the business. Someone who isn’t afraid to challenge the status quo and is keen to develop and mentor the management team to ensure high standards and proactive risk management all whilst keeping a calm head.- This is a new role for the business dedicated to ensuring we are a safe place to work and behavioural safety is imbedded within the whole team. You will have autonomy to scope set and run initiatives, create metrics and systems to enable the tracking and management of HSQE and support to work towards further ISO standards as appropriate.- Ideally you will have experience of senior leadership within a laboratory environment, hold a NEBOSH Diploma or equivalent and be a Chartered Member of Institute of Occupational Safety & Health (CMIOSH) or suitable equivalent.- We are happy to discuss flexible and hybrid working as part of the selection process.Key Accountabilities:
- Develops, roll out and monitor the compliance of health, safety and environment policies and procedures that are proactive and commercially grounded
- Ensure safe and secure workplaces through regular audit, hazard Identification and risk assessment
- Ensure that all hazardous activities are analysed and required preventive measures and safe systems of work are implemented
- Ensure renewals and safety inspections are completed on time and where required by competent contractors
- Design, implement and coordinate initiatives and training to raise awareness and understanding of HSE
- Champion behavioural safety and work with the People Director to establish a culture which supports this
- Provide technical advice, coaching, guidance to C1H employees
- Mentor Operations and Lab Managers to enable them to spot potential hazards and take action
- Identify best practices and lead continuous improvement initiatives to reduce work process risks raise safety awareness and improve safe work practices;
- Manage the reporting of incidents/accidents as required to the HSE and other health and safety organisations
- With support from the People Director manage any claims or potential claims with the insurers
- Develop Environment, Social and Governance (ESG) criteria and initiatives with key stakeholders, using this to drive value and sustainability
- Develop metrics and trend reporting to identify risks and concerns
- Maintain and increase ISO standards
- Ensure management of all hazardous waste, use of appropriate contractors and maintenance of records
- Maintain and implement efficient operational emergency response plans and ensure legislative compliance
- Essential Competence/Qualification:
- Experience of HSE management within a laboratory environment, preferably working with biological agents and Cat 2 or above status
- Knowledge and experience of quality, security, occupational health, safety and environmental management systems and relevant areas of civil and criminal law implemented in complex and/or industrial environments
- NEBOSH Diploma (Occupational Health & Safety and Environment) or equivalent
- Chartered member of Institute of Occupational Safety & Health (CMIOSH) or suitable equivalent and maintains CPD
- Evidence of providing SHE leadership at a senior level
- Excellent IT skills particularly the Microsoft office Suite
- Strong evidence of mentoring and advising senior managers in SHE activities
- Previous ISO accreditation experience 14001 / 9001 and other laboratory standards
- Experience of ESG initiatives/reporting
