English - Second in Department

**Role**:English - Second in Department
**Academy**:Outwood Academy Redcar
**Start Date**:September 2025 or sooner by negotiation
**Salary**:£31,650 - £49,084 (MPS1 - UPS3) with TLR 2.1 (£3,391)
**About the role**:
The English Department at Outwood Academy Redcar is friendly, welcoming and supportive. It is made up of 7 teachers and a one-to-one tutor, all with a wide range of experience and skills. There are many opportunities for staff to develop a range of career opportunities within the school and the trust, making the English Department at Outwood Academy Redcar a rewarding place to work.
The role of second in department is both a stimulating and rewarding one. You will be responsible for supporting the HoD on our journey to outstanding. The KS3 Curriculum is considered a working document and, in this role, you will have primary responsibility for the constant development of a dynamic and challenging curriculum.
The current curriculum is engaging and bold with reading at its heart. The curriculum has been designed to enable texts to be used to foster a love of reading and learning. These texts, such as Ghost Boys and The Breadwinner, encourage students to think about the world beyond Redcar. The school has invested a lot of money in novels which are up to date, relevant and which deal with a range of issues faced by young people today. A wide range of poetry is also embedded in all units of work in years 7, 8, and 9.
Teaching takes place in the department’s seven classrooms with every teacher having their own dedicated room. Every classroom has a visualiser and these are used extensively by the team. All classrooms have interactive whiteboards. There is a library with a wide range of fiction to support students’ reading needs which is run by a full-time enthusiastic librarian.
There is a strong whole-school literacy strategy which aims to ensure that all students can gain the educational and personal benefits of reading. This includes Accelerated Reader and a variety of reading interventions for readers who are not yet proficient. The specialist literacy teaching assistant uses the Ruth Miskin phonics programme to support emergent readers.
As in all OGAT secondary academies, the department prepares students for Eduqas GCSE English Language and English Literature qualifications. The programme of study is fully resourced with high-quality materials produced by staff across the trust who know this specification well. We aim to make all our teachers ‘experts’ in preparing students for GCSE examinations, using our thorough and systematic methods devised over many years. We have the benefit of support from the trust’s team of expert English directors, who provide support, materials, advice, coaching and who model and team-teach in lessons alongside us to develop our expertise.
**About the Academy**:
Outwood Academy Redcar welcomes students aged 11-16, located in the coastal town of Redcar near Middlesbrough in the North-East region.
Our academy is known for its warm and supportive environment, with a focus on inclusion and providing opportunities and experiences beyond the classroom for our students.
There is a real sense of togetherness within the team of staff, who work closely to consistently manage our high standards, creating a calm environment conducive for learning and achievement.
You will be responsible for effective classroom management and the coordinator of class work with any classroom support staff that are present. You must evaluate lessons and incorporate student views and responses to reflect and identify areas of development.
Applicants must hold UK QTS, if trained overseas, or be able to provide relevant evidence that your qualification equates to UK QTS.
