**8.** **Job Purpose**

8.1 Provides a variety of general portering, cleaning and messenger services within the hospital.

**9.** **Accountabilities/Activities**

9.1 Escorts patients between wards and other departments including theatre and to assist with the transfer of patients from bed to trolley.

9.2 Delivers and collects patients’ mail, newspapers, flowers, etc. and sorts mail into pigeon holds a.m.

9.3 Provides a portering service for all wards and departments and performing other relevant duties as designated.

9.4 Collects and disposes refuse from all wards, operating theatre and other departments in accordance with the hospital policy for disposal of waste.

9.5 Provides an external messenger service, delivery and collection of specimens from laboratories, etc. as required.

9.6 Replenishes and checks medical gases in operating theatres and wards as required.

9.7 Responsible for the security of all departments within the hospital ensuring that doors, windows, etc. are locked/unlocked at required times and ensuring fire exits are kept clear.

9.8 Moves beds and other equipment as request by departments and collects laundry from within the hospital and puts in baskets as required.

9.9 Relieve receptionists’ duties when necessary and operates the hospital switchboard as required.

9.10 Responsible for internal maintenance and upkeep of hospital, for the general tidiness of the hospital grounds and the cleaning of the hospital car.

9.11 Performs duties as required by the Hospital Engineer including daily readings and minor maintenance/decoration.

9.12 Acknowledge the risk of Healthcare Associated Infections (HCAI) and understand own responsibility as agreed with line manager in the prevention and control of HCAI.

**10. General**

10.1 Complies with obligations in respect of the Health and Safety at Work legislation, fire drills, fire procedures, etc.

10.2 To help promote and maintain the documented quality systems as a means of ensuring that the hospital’s services conform to specified requirements.

10.3 Participate in in-house orientation and training programmes and the hospital Enabling Excellence scheme and to actively seek personal and professional development.

10.4 Perform any other relevant duty as assigned.

**11. Judgement Skills**

11.1 To support the team in carrying out all customer focussed services and work processes suggesting improvements, which it is believed, will enhance the department’s performance, business and quality systems.

**12. Freedom of Action**

12.1 Job holder whilst working under the direction of the Facilities Portering Team Leader needs to be self-motivated and able to work without supervision.

**13. Dimensions**

13.1 To support other members of the Facilities team.

**14. Environment**

14.1 The job holder will be working within numerous areas of the hospital dealing with both internal and external customers.

14.2 There will be access to confidential information, which must remain confidential at all times.

**15. Qualifications, Training and Experience**

15.1 Job holder should have completed basic secondary education.

15.2 Should have six months to one year’s experience of portering or similar work preferably within a hospital.

**To work within the portering team to provide cover 365 days 24 hours a day.**

**At all times maintain own working environment in a clean, neat and decluttered manner and adhere to Infection Prevention procedures and practices so as to proactively contribute to the protection of patients, visitors, and staff from acquiring a healthcare associated infection**
